Langfang Travel Guide: A Theatre City, a Lantern Town and the Beijing Fringe
Langfang lies between Beijing and Tianjin, one stop from Beijing South on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway, and for years it was just somewhere people passed through. It now has a real reason to stop: Only Red Mansions: Theatre Dream City, a huge immersive-theatre park based on Dream of the Red Chamber that opened in 2023 and was completed in June 2026. Add Shengfang, an old water town in Bazhou with a nationally listed lantern festival, and Langfang makes a good day trip from Beijing or a one-night stop.
Places worth visiting
Only Red Mansions: Theatre Dream City
Director Wang Chaoge's theatre city opened on 23 July 2023 in the Dream Langfang International Drama Park and became fully operational on 16 June 2026. That final phase added a new south main gate, a 320-metre city wall and new shows, bringing the total to 55 productions with more than 1,500 minutes of performance across the site. One of the new works plays at random across 35 tiny stages, with the audience wandering between them. You can't see everything in a day, which is why a three-day ticket was introduced. Plan at least a full day, check the day's schedule as soon as you arrive, and prioritise the core main shows. Some familiarity with the novel helps, but the staging works without it. Ticket types and prices are on the official channels.
Shengfang old town
Shengfang, a town in Bazhou in the south of the prefecture, is a waterside settlement among reed ponds. Its old quarter has the Wenchang Pavilion, the Zhang and Wang family mansions, and the East, West and North bridges. Lantern-making here dates from the mid-Ming and peaked in the late Qing. The Shengfang lantern festival, revived in 1984, became national intangible heritage in 2008. It's held around the Lantern Festival (the 36th edition ran from 9 to 13 February 2025) with lantern displays, stilt walkers, dragon and lion dances and more than 50 folk troupes. Outside the festival the town is quiet, a pleasant half day. For snacks, try the fried zhagao cakes by the North Bridge and chestnut cake.
Tianxia Diyi Cheng (Xianghe)
In Xianghe, part of the "northern three counties" exclave between Beijing and Tianjin, Tianxia Diyi Cheng is a replica of Ming-Qing Beijing that opened in 1998. Its gates follow the old city's gate system, and inside there's an Old Beijing shopping street and a reconstructed corner of the Old Summer Palace. It's dated compared with the theatre city, so only go if you're curious about 1990s Chinese theme parks. Check opening arrangements before you travel.
Dachang Hui Autonomous County
Also in the northern exclave, Dachang has been a Hui (Chinese Muslim) county since 1955. It is known for Hui-style beef and lamb. It's a lunch stop if you're driving the northern counties, not a sightseeing destination.
The city centre itself is modern and built around universities, technology parks and energy companies, with parks and the stadium. It's fine for a meal and a night, but there's nothing to seek out.
When to come to Langfang
April to June and September to October. The weather matches Beijing's: hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Winter smog was once severe across this part of Hebei, so check air quality. Come for Shengfang in the Spring Festival period, when the lanterns are up, and expect large crowds.
Getting in and where to stay
- High-speed rail: Langfang station opened in 2011 on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway, one stop from Beijing South, with trains continuing to Tianjin South and beyond. Guangyang station serves the older Beijing–Shanghai line.
- Air: Part of Beijing Daxing International Airport is actually inside Langfang's Guangyang District. Beijing Capital Airport is about an hour's drive.
- Around the prefecture: The prefecture is split in two. Xianghe, Sanhe and Dachang form an exclave cut off from the rest of the city by Beijing and Tianjin, and Bazhou is in the south. A car or ride-hailing makes cross-county visits manageable.
Stay near the theatre city if you're doing a two- or three-day ticket, or near Langfang station for rail connections.
Eating in Langfang
North China plain food: dumplings, noodles, braised meats and pancakes. Dachang's Hui beef and lamb are the regional speciality. At Shengfang, eat the local snacks. The theatre city has its own food streets for long days inside.
How to arrange the route
Day trip from Beijing: Morning train to Langfang, full day at the theatre city, evening train back.
Two days: Day 1 at the theatre city. Day 2, drive to Shengfang for the old town, then return to Beijing or head on to Tianjin or south to Baoding.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, give it all to the theatre city. Shengfang is worth a special trip at Lantern Festival time but can be cut otherwise. Tianxia Diyi Cheng is the first cut.
Things to confirm before you go
- Theatre city show schedule and ticket type (one-day or three-day).
- Shengfang lantern festival dates, which follow the lunar calendar.
- Tianxia Diyi Cheng opening status.
- Air quality in winter.
