Tianjin Travel Guide: Concession Streets, the Haihe River and the Tianjin Eye
Tianjin is half an hour from Beijing on the fastest trains, which is why so many people treat it as a day trip. It is better with one night. The city's appeal is its former foreign concessions, nine of them at their peak, and the Haihe River that runs through them, and both look their best in the evening. Spend a late afternoon in the Italian Style Town, walk or cruise the Haihe after dark, and ride the Tianjin Eye if you want the view from above (CNY 90 by day, CNY 138 at night in 2026). Add the Wudadao villa district the next morning, and you have seen the core of the city in two relaxed days.
Planning around the evening
Most of what makes Tianjin worth the trip sits within a few kilometres of the river, and the order matters more than the list:
- Afternoon: the Italian Style Town on the north bank, free to walk, with Marco Polo and Dante squares at its centre.
- Sunset: the Tianjin Eye, if you are riding. Board just before the day session ends to catch dusk from the top.
- After dark: the Haihe River between the Eye and Jiefang Bridge, on foot for free or by night cruise.
On a day trip from Beijing you lose step three, which is the best of the three. That is the main argument for staying over.
When to come to Tianjin
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the comfortable months for walking. Summer is hot and humid, and riverside evenings are crowded. Winter is cold and windy but often clear, good for architecture photographs if you dress for it, and gulls winter on the Haihe and follow the cruise boats until early spring. National holidays and summer weekends fill the Italian Style Town and the area round the Eye from early evening.
Getting in and where to stay
Intercity and high-speed trains link Beijing South and Tianjin Station many times an hour. Tianjin West and Tianjin South handle many longer-distance routes, and Binhai International Airport has domestic and some international flights. Tianjin Station is the most useful arrival point: it stands on the Haihe beside Jiefang Bridge, with the river cruise pier in its forecourt and the Italian Style Town a short walk away.
The metro covers all the main sights. Staying near Tianjin Station or along the Haihe lets you walk back after the river at night; Wudadao and Heping district suit a quieter base.
Places worth visiting
Italian Style Town
Italy took its concession in 1902, and the area was restored between 2002 and 2008 into a pedestrian district of villas, former residences and cafes. The streets are free; some individual former residences charge entry. It is busy in the evening, when the buildings are lit, and quiet in the morning. The Italian Style Town page has a walking order and metro details.
Haihe River and the Tianjin Eye
The Eye is a 120-metre Ferris wheel built into Yongle Bridge where the Haihe begins. Rides take about thirty minutes, tickets are booked by real name three days ahead through the operator's WeChat account, and on Mondays it opens only in the evening. From the Eye the river walk runs downstream past Shizilin, Jintang and Bei'an bridges to Jiefang Bridge, about an hour on foot. The March 2026 cruise schedule has a CNY 80 day route and a CNY 138, roughly 50-minute night route from 19:30. Fares, piers and viewpoints are on the Tianjin Eye and Haihe River pages.
Wudadao (Five Great Avenues)
South of the centre, the former British concession extension is a grid of tree-lined roads lined with villas, most from the 1920s. The six main roads are Machang, Munan, Dali, Changde, Chongqing and Chengdu, and a group of the buildings became a national protected site in 2013. It is a place for a slow morning walk or a bicycle ride; most villas are private or offices and can only be seen from outside.
Ancient Culture Street
On the west bank near the Eye, this pedestrian street of Qing-style shopfronts was rebuilt from 1986 around the Tianhou Temple. It is touristy, but it is the easiest place to buy Yangliuqing New Year prints, Nirenzhang clay figures and Fengzheng Wei kites, and it fits naturally before or after the Eye.
Eating in Tianjin
Tianjin's breakfast is jianbing guozi, a mung-bean crepe folded round a crisp fried sheet, sold from stalls across the city. The traditional "three treasures" are Goubuli steamed buns, Guifaxiang twisted mahua and Erduoyan fried rice cakes. The flagship Goubuli restaurants are crowded and priced for visitors; ordinary bun shops are quicker and cheaper. The Italian Style Town has Western cafes and restaurants, and the Ancient Culture Street is the place to try snacks. Prices are posted in shops, so check as you order.
How to arrange the route
Two days (recommended):
- Day 1: arrive mid-afternoon, check in near the river, walk the Italian Style Town, ride the Eye around sunset, then walk or cruise the Haihe.
- Day 2: Wudadao in the morning, lunch, Ancient Culture Street, train back.
Day trip from Beijing: take an early train, walk Wudadao and the Italian Style Town, ride the Eye in the late afternoon, and catch a mid-evening train. Book the return in advance on weekends.
Three days: add museums and a longer Wudadao visit, or a trip to the Binhai coast.
What to cut if short on time
Drop Wudadao first, since it is the slowest to enjoy. Keep the Italian Style Town and one evening on the river. If you must choose between the Eye and the river walk, the walk shows more of the city and costs nothing.
Things to confirm before you go
- Train tickets between Beijing and Tianjin, which sell out on weekend evenings and holidays.
- The Tianjin Eye booking window, Monday hours and wind closures.
- The current Haihe cruise schedule and fares in the "海河游船" mini-program.
- Entry fees for any individual former residence you want to go inside.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tianjin worth an overnight stay from Beijing?
Yes, if you want the river at night. A day trip covers the concession streets, but the Haihe walk and night cruise are the best part of the city, and they happen after the last comfortable trains.
How much does the Tianjin Eye cost?
From 20 April 2026, CNY 90 for the day session and CNY 138 for the night session from 18:00, with half-price fares for children and seniors. Book by real name through the official WeChat account.
Should I see the Italian Style Town or Wudadao?
The Italian Style Town if you have one afternoon. It is more compact and livelier. Wudadao is quieter and more residential, better for a morning walk on a second day.
