Meishan Travel Guide: Sansu Shrine, Dongpo Food, and Wawushan
Meishan, south of Chengdu on high-speed rail, splits into two trip moods. The urban Dongpo District holds the Sansu Shrine (Three Su Temple): halls and gardens for Su Xun, Su Shi (Dongpo) and Su Zhe. Wawushan in Hongya County is a full cable-car mountain day. Stacking shrine and summit on the same calendar usually means a late cable-car scramble.
Places worth visiting
Sansu Shrine south gate
High-speed rail from Chengdu makes the shrine an easy half-day add-on. Enter through the main gates and give stele corridors unhurried reading time.
Gardens and halls inside Sansu Shrine
Pair with Dongpo Water Street evenings and local pork dishes. Tickets follow the official notice.
Hall buildings and the mountain day
Wawushan needs sightseeing buses and dual cable cars onto the table mountain in Hongya; summit ponds, viewpoints and forest trails need early starts and warm layers. Liujiang Ancient Town is optional filler only when you already drive the Hongya corridor. Stay near Meishan East / Dongpo for rail and food; overnight at the mountain foot only with confirmed early entry.
When to come to Meishan
Sichuan basin fringe: humid summers, damp cool winters. April–June and September–November suit shrine walking and clearer ridge views. Rhododendron interest on Wawushan clusters in late spring; summer is cooler on the summit than in the city but wetter on trails. Winter fog can erase mountain panoramas while the shrine gardens stay visitable. Weekdays beat holiday queues.
Getting in and where to stay
High-speed rail to Meishan East puts you near the urban core; taxis or city buses reach Sansu Shrine. Wawushan needs a hired car, county coach via Hongya or packaged transfer; confirm last cable-car times before you ascend.
Eating in Meishan
Dongpo-style pork and other Meishan dishes after the shrine; hydrate if the chili runs hot. Mountain-base food is thinner than city alleys. Ask for set prices; this guide does not quote yuan amounts.
How to arrange the route
Day 1: Arrive Meishan East; Sansu Shrine; Dongpo Water Street dinner.
Day 2: Full Wawushan day if weather clears, or deepen city food and soft walks.
Day 3: Rail back to Chengdu or onward.
What to cut if short on time
Keep Sansu Shrine if Chengdu rail time is short. Cut Liujiang first, then Wawushan if you cannot protect a full mountain day. Do not treat the summit as a quick stop after the shrine.
Things to confirm before you go
- Sansu hours and any reservation rules on the official notice.
- Wawushan cable-car last times and weather closures.
- Transfer time to Hongya.
- Current ticket rules; do not rely on old blog prices.
