Panzhihua Travel Guide: Jinsha Canyon, Yi Villages, and Winter Sun City

Panzhihua is a southern Sichuan steel and vanadium-titanium city that markets winter sunshine more than a compact heritage old town. Scenic payoff sits outside downtown along Jinsha River canyon viewpoints and Yi / Lipo villages such as Yishala. Treat urban districts as sleep, fruit markets and Third Front industrial memory. Do not expect Chengdu tea-house density.

When to come to Panzhihua

Dry-hot valley climate relative to much of Sichuan: winters are the marketed sun season; summers are hot. Clear winter days suit canyon viewpoints. Summer heat argues for early starts. Weekdays ease village tourism crowds.

Getting in and where to stay

Rail and road link southern Sichuan / Yunnan corridors. Canyon and village days need hired cars. Stay in the city for sleep and markets; village lodging only if dawn village light owns the trip.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: Arrive; city markets; rest.

Day 2: Jinsha canyon viewpoints and Yishala (or similar) village day.

Day 3: Memorial hall or soft city buffer; rail onward.

What to cut if short on time

Keep one canyon-and-village road day. Cut memorial stacking first if weather is clear for the gorge. Downtown sightseeing alone is rarely the reason to stop.
