Chongli, Zhangjiakou's Mountain and Ski District

Chongli District lies about 50 kilometres north of central Zhangjiakou and roughly 220 kilometres from Beijing by road. It sits beyond the outer Great Wall on the transition between the North China Plain and the Inner Mongolia plateau. For the 2022 Winter Olympics, Chongli hosted many of the snow events linked to the Zhangjiakou competition zone, and the district now markets itself as a ski and summer trail base. Lodging logic belongs near the resorts or Taizicheng, not beside Dajingmen in the old city.

Olympic and resort landscape

Chinese sources list eight well-known ski areas in the district, among them Thaiwoo, Wanlong, Genting Secret Garden, Fulong, Cuiyunshan Galaxy, Dolomiti, Great Wall Resort and Anaya Chongli. Exact lift maps, snowmaking schedules and ticket rules belong to each operator and change by season, so follow the day's notice. Ignore any outdated printed yuan figure. The Olympic core around Taizicheng was planned with rail and local transit links so visitors could reach venues without driving every transfer.

Snow cover here usually builds earlier and lasts longer than on the surrounding plains. Local climate notes describe snowfall beginning in mid to late October and continuing into early April, with deep seasonal accumulation on the forested slopes. Average annual temperature sits near 3.3 °C. Forest cover across the district is reported above half the land area, which shapes both summer hiking and winter wind protection.

Summer trails versus winter ski weeks

Decide early which season owns the trip. Winter weeks revolve around lift tickets, boot drying and early starts. Summer and early autumn favour forest trails, cooler highland air and birch colour on clear days. National Day and peak ski weekends pack resort villages hard. Weekdays ease queues at lifts and shuttle stops.

Do not try to combine a full Chongli ski day with a late Dajingmen climb and a Zhangbei sky-road sunset. The gate in the city and the Bashang plateau each need their own daylight. Chongli alone rewards one focused block of two or three nights.

Getting there and where to stay

The Chongli railway spur ends at Taizicheng station, about 15 kilometres southeast of the older Chongli town centre at Xiwangzi. High-speed services link Taizicheng with Beijing North and Qinghe. A separate Chongli station on another line opened around the Olympic period. Confirm the station printed on your ticket before you book a resort transfer.

Stay in resort hotels when ski or trail days start early. Stay nearer Zhangjiakou city only if Dajingmen and rail connections matter more than first lifts. Long-distance coaches also run between Beijing and Chongli, yet schedules shrink outside peak weeks.

Tickets, hours and practical notes

Resort tickets, lesson bookings and trail closures follow operator and weather notices. Carry ID for lift media where required. Mountain weather shifts quickly. Wind layers, sunglasses and spare gloves matter even on bright midwinter days. In summer, grippy shoes and water matter on longer forest circuits.

The Zhangjiakou travel guide frames how to sequence Chongli, Dajingmen and Bashang without stacking all three into one tired evening.

Visit order

Day one, rail to Taizicheng or Chongli and settle near your chosen resort. Day two, a full ski or trail day. Day three, a second mountain day or a transfer back through Zhangjiakou for the Dajingmen gate if you skipped it on arrival. Keep Bashang for a separate clear morning if grassland driving is part of the plan.

Before you go

  • Confirm which resort cluster matches your skill level and lodging budget.
  • Check rail station names and last resort shuttles.
  • Pair mountain days with Dajingmen only on arrival or departure buffers.
  • Read the Zhangjiakou travel guide for eating and three-day routing.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Chongli?

Two full mountain days plus travel buffers suit most visitors. One day only works if you already sleep at the resort.

Is Chongli only for skiers?

No. Summer and autumn trail walking use the same forest valleys, with lighter crowds outside holiday peaks.

Can I ski Chongli as a Beijing day trip?

Possible on paper by early high-speed rail, yet lift time shrinks and evening returns feel rushed. An overnight near the slopes is kinder.

Where do the Olympic venues sit relative to town?

Many snow venues clustered around the Taizicheng area southeast of the older county seat. Exact open facilities change after the Games, so check current resort maps.
