Jilin City Travel Guide: Rime Ice on the Songhua and Northeast Winter

Jilin City, not to be confused with the province it gave its name to, is a river city on the Songhua about 100 km east of Changchun. Its winter draw is rime ice (wusong): on the coldest mornings, mist rising from the unfrozen river freezes onto the willows and pines along the banks, turning them white and feathery. It's not guaranteed every day, so plan a buffer morning. Add skiing at Beidahu or Songhua Lake, and Jilin City makes a good three-day winter trip; in summer it's a quiet river city with mountain parks.

Rime ice: how it works and when to look

Upstream of the city, the Fengman hydroelectric dam releases water that's warmer than the winter air, so the Songhua stays open through Jilin even when nights fall to around −20°C. Vapour from the river drifts onto the trees overnight and freezes. The best displays come in January and February on clear, still, very cold nights following a misty evening. Locals describe the rhythm in a saying: look at the fog at night, the rime in the early morning, and the "falling flowers" toward noon, as the ice drops from the branches in the sun.

So: go out early, from dawn to about 10 am. Check the forecast and local rime reports the night before; on a mild or windy night there may be little to see.

Where to watch the rime

  • Riverside promenades in the city: the embankment along the Songhua has long stretches of rime-covered willows, easy to reach by taxi or on foot from central hotels. Allow an hour or two.
  • Rime Island (Wusong Island): downstream of the city, around Hantun village, this is the famous spot for rime landscapes over fields and farmhouses, often with heavier rime than in town. Many visitors stay overnight in a farmhouse guesthouse to be there at dawn. Allow a half day plus travel; check access arrangements and any tickets before going.

Skiing

Jilin is one of China's main ski areas, and it co-hosted the 2007 Asian Winter Games. Beidahu, southeast of the city, is a large resort with long runs and hosted Asian Games events. Songhua Lake resort is closer to the city, with a modern village. The season runs roughly from late November to March; book rentals and lessons in advance during holidays.

Other sights

  • Jilin Meteorite Museum: displays fragments of the 1976 Jilin meteorite shower, including what's described as the largest stony meteorite from a witnessed fall.
  • Beishan (North Hill) Park: wooded hill on the city's west side with Buddhist and Taoist temples and views over the river; the Qianlong Emperor is said to have visited.
  • Catholic Cathedral: Gothic church on the river, built in the 1920s.
  • Wulajie: a Qing-era town downstream that once supplied tribute goods to the imperial court; a few old buildings remain.
  • Songhua Lake: a reservoir in the hills southeast of the city, good for summer boating and walks.

When to come to Jilin City

Late December to February for rime and skiing; January is the most reliable for rime. Pack for −20°C or colder at dawn: insulated boots, layers, a face cover, and spare batteries (cold drains them fast). In summer (June to August), the river and lake are pleasant and the weather mild. Spring and late autumn are grey and quiet.

Getting in and where to stay

High-speed trains on the Changchun–Jilin intercity line take about 40 minutes from Changchun, which has the nearest major airport. The Jilin–Hunchun high-speed line continues east to Yanji and the Changbai Mountain region. Taxis are cheap and the easiest way to get around. For Rime Island and the ski resorts, take a tour, shuttle or private car; confirm the current options locally.

Stay on the river in the city for easy dawn rime walks, at Rime Island for village dawns, or at a ski resort for skiing.

Eating in Jilin City

Northeast food is hearty and suited to the cold: stews with potatoes and vermicelli, guobaorou (sweet-and-sour fried pork), pork and sauerkraut, and dumplings. Songhua River fish is a local speciality. Korean-style cold noodles and barbecue are common too, reflecting the province's Korean community. Hot meals and tea after a dawn outing are part of the experience.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: Arrive from Changchun; afternoon at the Meteorite Museum and Beishan; early night.

Day 2: Dawn on the river promenade; afternoon transfer to Rime Island and overnight in a farmhouse.

Day 3: Rime Island at dawn; afternoon skiing at Songhua Lake or return to Changchun.

Add one or two days for Beidahu, or continue to Yanji and Changbai Mountain.

What to cut if short on time

With one day, do the riverside rime at dawn and the Meteorite Museum. Skip Rime Island unless you can stay overnight.
