Sanming Travel Guide: Taining's Golden Lake, Danxia Gorges and Shaxian Snacks
Sanming is an inland, mountainous prefecture of western Fujian, and the place most visitors head for is Taining County, part of the China Danxia World Heritage listing. There, Dajinhu, the Golden Lake, winds between red sandstone cliffs, with the Ganlu Temple tucked into a rock overhang; nearby, bamboo rafts drift down Shangqing Stream and trails thread the narrow Zhaixia Canyon. Trains from Fuzhou reach Taining in about two hours. Base yourself in Taining old town for two days.
How Taining works
Taining's sights are spread out, but a simple shuttle system links them. From Taining Station, city buses 5 and 9 run to the tourist distribution centre at the old town, and from there tourist shuttles serve each scenic area: roughly 25 minutes to Dajinhu, 25 minutes to Shangqing Stream and 40 minutes to Zhaixia Canyon. Each area has its own ticket and its own rhythm:
- Dajinhu boat: the lake trip, with a stop at Ganlu Temple, takes about four hours in total.
- Shangqing Stream raft: about two hours drifting downstream on bamboo rafts.
- Zhaixia Canyon: about two and a half hours of walking.
Doing two of the three in one day is comfortable; all three is a rush.
Places worth visiting
Dajinhu, the Golden Lake
The lake is a reservoir that flooded a Danxia landscape, so the boat glides between red cliffs, wooded islands and caves at water level. It is the core sight of Taining's World Heritage area and the one to keep if you only have a day. Morning boats are calmer and the light on the cliffs is better. Boat times and fares are set by the scenic area; check the day's sailings.
Ganlu Temple
Ganlu Temple is the photograph everyone takes at Taining: wooden halls built into a huge cave-like overhang in the cliff, propped on a single pillar. You reach it on the lake circuit. The path up is short but steep and wet in rain.
Lakeside pavilions
Around the temple and the landings, small pavilions and pools make good rest stops between the boat and the cliff paths. It is worth slowing down here rather than rushing back to the jetty.
Shangqing Stream and Zhaixia Canyon
Shangqing Stream is the easy option: you sit on a bamboo raft while boatmen pole you through a narrow, winding gorge. Zhaixia Canyon is the active one, a walk through deep slots and along cliff paths in the Danxia rock. Pick the raft on a hot day or with children, the canyon if you want exercise.
Taining old town and Sanming city
Taining's old town has Shangshu Di, a well-preserved Ming dynasty residence complex, and is where the tourist shuttles start, which makes it the obvious base. Sanming city itself is a working industrial city; its claim to food fame is Shaxian, the district that gave its name to the "Shaxian snacks" restaurants found all over China. Further out, Jiangle's Yuhua Cave is a large karst cave for travellers with an extra day.
When to come to Sanming
Autumn, from September to November, is the most pleasant season, with clear skies that show off the red rock. Spring is green but rainy. Summer is hot and humid, but rafting and the shaded canyon are pleasant; heavy summer rain can suspend boats and rafts. Winters are cool and damp. Chinese holidays bring long queues for boats and rafts, so go midweek if you can.
Getting in and where to stay
- From Fuzhou: direct trains to Taining Station take about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Fuzhou is the nearest major airport.
- In Taining: buses 5 and 9 from the station to the old town tourist distribution centre, then tourist shuttles to each scenic area.
- Sanming city: has its own stations on other lines; check which station is on your ticket before assuming Taining is a short ride away.
- Where to stay: Taining old town, close to the shuttles and restaurants.
Nanping and the Wuyi Mountains are north; Longyan and its tulou are south. The Fujian coast, Xiamen included, is a different kind of trip.
Eating in Sanming
Shaxian snacks started here: flat-meat wontons, peanut-sauce noodles and steamed dumplings, cheap and filling. In Taining, river fish and mountain vegetables dominate menus, and local restaurants near the old town serve a hearty dinner after a day on the water.
How to arrange the route
Day 1: morning train to Taining, Dajinhu boat with Ganlu Temple in the afternoon, dinner in the old town.
Day 2: Shangqing Stream raft in the morning, Zhaixia Canyon after lunch, or a slower old town morning, then onward.
Day 3 (optional): Yuhua Cave or Sanming city for Shaxian snacks on the way out.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, do the lake and Ganlu Temple. Zhaixia Canyon is the first extra to drop in rain; Yuhua Cave and Sanming city are only for longer trips.
