Shangluo Travel Guide: Qinling Ridges, Jinsi Gorge and the New Fast Trains from Xi'an
Shangluo covers the southern slopes of the Qinling mountains southeast of Xi'an, and in 2026 it became far easier to reach. The Xi'an–Shiyan high-speed line opened on June 30, 2026, with Xi'an East to Shangluo West in as little as 24 minutes, and the Xi'an–Ankang line followed on September 28, putting Zhashui, the gateway to the Niubeiliang ridge, within half an hour of Xi'an. Come for mountain walking at Niubeiliang, the narrow water gorge at Jinsi Gorge in Shangnan, and the river-trade town of Manchuanguan.
Two new lines change the plan
Until mid-2026, getting to Shangluo meant a slow train on the old Ningxi railway into Shangluo North or a long bus ride, and most visitors came on tours. Now there are two separate high-speed routes, and which one you take depends on where you are going:
- Xi'an–Shiyan line (opened June 30, 2026): Xi'an East, Lantian, Shangluo West, Shanyang, Manchuanguan, Yunxi, Shiyan East. Use it for Shangluo city, Shanyang and Manchuanguan. Xi'an East to Shangluo West is about 24 minutes on the fastest trains, and three city bus routes link Shangluo West with the city centre.
- Xi'an–Ankang line (opened September 28, 2026): passes Zhashui West. Use it for Niubeiliang and Zhashui. The fastest trains reach Zhashui in about 28 minutes from Xi'an.
Both lines are new, so timetables are still being adjusted; check 12306 for your date. The old station, Shangluo North, still has conventional trains on the Ningxi line.
Places worth visiting
Shangluo city
The city sits in a narrow valley on the Danjiang river, surrounded by hills. It is a practical base rather than a sight in its own right: hotels, restaurants and bus connections to the counties. If you have an evening here, a walk along the river is the best use of it.
Niubeiliang ridge
Niubeiliang, in Zhashui County, is a national nature reserve on the Qinling main ridge, known for its takin and for the alpine meadows and rock outcrops near the top. The scenic area has a valley trail along streams and waterfalls and a cable car higher up. From Zhashui West, county shuttles and taxis cover the remaining distance in about 25 minutes. The ridge is much cooler than Xi'an and can be cloudy or icy outside summer, so carry a jacket.
Jinsi Gorge
Jinsi Gorge, in Shangnan County, is a long, narrow canyon with a boardwalk trail above a clear stream and small waterfalls. It is the best-known sight in Shangluo, and the walk takes a good half day. Through buses run from Shangnan town, and direct buses leave Xi'an from the Fangzhicheng bus station roughly every 40 minutes from 07:30 to 18:30. Rain can close sections of the trail.
Manchuanguan old town
Manchuanguan, in Shanyang County, was a river port where goods moved between Shaanxi and Hubei. The old street has merchant guild halls and a famous double opera stage, two stages joined side by side. With its own station on the Xi'an–Shiyan line, it is now an easy stop on the way to Shiyan and Wudang Mountain, or a day trip from Xi'an.
Shangluo North station
The conventional station is closer to the old city centre than Shangluo West. It still matters for slower routes, but for Xi'an the high-speed trains from Shangluo West are now the obvious choice.
When to come to Shangluo
Late spring to autumn is the season. Summer is the main draw: the Qinling ridges are far cooler than the Guanzhong plain, and Xi'an residents come up to escape the heat, which fills Niubeiliang on weekends. Autumn brings colour to the forests. Winter is cold, and the high trails can be icy or closed.
Getting in and where to stay
- From Xi'an: high-speed trains from Xi'an East to Shangluo West, Shanyang or Manchuanguan; trains to Zhashui West for Niubeiliang. Direct buses from Fangzhicheng bus station to Jinsi Gorge.
- Where to stay: Shangluo city for the counties, Zhashui for Niubeiliang, or simply day-trip from Xi'an.
- Onward: the Xi'an–Shiyan line continues to Shiyan and Wudang Mountain; the Xi'an–Ankang line runs on to Ankang. Hanzhong is further west in southern Shaanxi.
Eating in Shangluo
Food is hearty mountain fare: noodles, mountain greens, smoked meats and tofu dishes, plus walnuts and chestnuts from the hills. Near Niubeiliang and Jinsi Gorge, farmhouse restaurants serve set meals of local produce.
How to arrange the route
Day trip from Xi'an: train to Zhashui West, half a day at Niubeiliang, back to Xi'an in the evening. Or a direct bus to Jinsi Gorge.
Two days: day 1 Niubeiliang; day 2 high-speed train from Xi'an East (or via Shangluo) to Manchuanguan and on to Shiyan, or Jinsi Gorge by bus.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, pick a single area: Niubeiliang via Zhashui West, or Manchuanguan via the Xi'an–Shiyan line. Shangluo city is the first thing to skip. Jinsi Gorge needs the most travel time, so drop it unless you can stay overnight in Shangnan.
Plan B for bad weather
If rain closes the gorge trails, Manchuanguan's old street works in any weather, and Zhashui has show caves. Cloud on the ridge is common; the lower valley trail at Niubeiliang is still pleasant.
Things to confirm before you go
- Timetables on both new high-speed lines, still settling in after opening.
- Shuttles from Zhashui West to Niubeiliang.
- Trail and cable car status in rain or winter.
- Bus times from Fangzhicheng to Jinsi Gorge.
