Shangrao Travel Guide: Getting to Mount Sanqing and Planning the Ridge Day

Most people come to Shangrao for Mount Sanqing, a Taoist mountain of granite pillars and cliff walkways that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Shangrao Station, a high-speed rail hub in northeast Jiangxi, is the gateway: buses take about 1.5 hours to the southern cable car at Waishuangxi or about 2 hours to the eastern one at Jinsha. Plan two nights, ideally one of them on or beside the mountain, so you have a clear morning on the ridges.

Choosing a gate: south or east

Mount Sanqing, about 40 km north of Yushan County, has two main cable car entrances, and the choice shapes your day:

  • South, Waishuangxi cable car: the route most buses serve. The 2025 bus service from Shangrao Station took about 87 minutes; the ordinary tourist bus about two hours.
  • East, Jinsha cable car: about 120 minutes from Shangrao Station by bus. In 2025 the Jinsha cable car ran from 7:30 to 17:30.

Both bring you up to the ridge trail system, where you walk between the main viewpoints on stairs and cliff-face boardwalks. Many walkers go up one cable car and come down the other, but then you need to arrange your bags and your return bus from the other side. Bus times and cable car hours change by season; check the scenic area's notices before you set off.

Places worth visiting

The mountain's name means the "Three Pure Ones", after its three summits, Yujing, Yushui and Yuhua; Yujing, at 1,817 m, is the highest. What visitors come for is the granite: pillars and peaks shaped like animals and figures, with pines growing out of the cracks. Covering the main viewpoints on foot takes most of a day, cable cars included.

Above the clouds

Cloud seas form most often after rain in spring and autumn, usually early in the morning. That is the main reason to sleep on the mountain or near a gate: the first cable cars get you to the viewpoints before day-trippers, while the clouds are still low.

Cliff walkways

Long sections of the trail are walkways bolted onto sheer rock faces at about the same height, so the walking is less steep than it looks. The drops are dramatic, but rails are solid. In fog, you see little beyond the railing; in that case, walk the sheltered sections and wait for a break rather than climbing to every viewpoint.

Wuyuan villages

Wuyuan County, also part of Shangrao, is famous for whitewashed Huizhou-style villages and spring rapeseed fields. It is a separate trip with its own high-speed station, not an add-on to a Sanqing day. Combine them only with an extra night.

Shangrao city

The city is a transport hub rather than a destination. Stay near Shangrao Station only for a late arrival or an early train.

When to come to Shangrao

April to June and September to November are the main walking seasons. Spring and early summer bring flowering shrubs and frequent cloud seas, but also rain. Autumn is clearer. Summer is humid with thunderstorms, and winter brings ice that can close sections of the trail or the cable cars, though rime on the pines is a winter attraction for some visitors. Chinese holidays crowd the cable car queues.

Getting in and where to stay

  • By rail: Shangrao Station is on the Shanghai–Kunming and Hefei–Fuzhou high-speed lines, with direct trains from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanchang and Fuzhou.
  • To the mountain: buses from Shangrao Station to the Waishuangxi (south) and Jinsha (east) cable cars. Seats on the bus service book online; check the day's departures.
  • Where to stay: a hotel on the summit ridge for sunrise, or at the foot of your chosen cable car for an early start.

Quzhou is a short high-speed ride east, Jingdezhen and Huangshan are north, and Yingtan, with Longhushan, is west on the way to Nanchang.

Eating in Shangrao

Jiangxi food is spicy and salty: chilli-fried meats, smoked tofu and mountain vegetables. On the mountain, choice is limited and prices are high, so bring snacks and water for the ridge. Back in the city, local restaurants near the station serve hearty dinners.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: train to Shangrao, bus to the gate, overnight at the foot of the mountain or on the ridge.

Day 2: first cable car up, full ridge day, down the same or the other side.

Day 3: Wuyuan villages, or onward by train.

What to cut if short on time

With one day, take an early bus to the south gate, walk the main cliff circuit and come back down the same way. Shangrao city is the first thing to skip; a second cable car route in thick fog is the next.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Bus departures from Shangrao Station to each gate.
  • Cable car hours and any weather closures.
  • Mountain hotel bookings, which sell out on holidays.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Shangrao Station to Mount Sanqing?

By bus: about 87 minutes to the southern Waishuangxi cable car or about two hours to the eastern Jinsha cable car, based on 2025 timetables.

Should I stay on the mountain?

If you want sunrise or a cloud sea, yes. Otherwise a hotel near the cable car is cheaper and simpler.

Can I combine Mount Sanqing and Wuyuan in one day?

Not realistically; give Wuyuan its own day.
