Mukden Palace, the Qing Court's First Capital Halls

Mukden Palace, the Shenyang Imperial Palace, sits in Shenhe District at the centre of the old city. It was the palace of the Later Jin and of the Qing before the court moved to Beijing, then a secondary capital palace for eastern tours. Chinese Wikipedia dates the start of construction to 1625, when Nurhaci moved his capital to Shenyang, and gives the compound about 60,000 square metres. It is one of only two complete imperial palace complexes surviving in China, far smaller than Beijing's Forbidden City but distinct in Manchu layout. In July 2004 it joined the World Heritage list as an extension of the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing.

Three courts, one Manchu story

The palace splits into eastern, central and western sections. The eastern court is the most distinctive: Dazheng Hall, an octagonal double-eaved pavilion on a stone stylobate, flanked by ten royal pavilions in a single arc. The layout echoes Eight Banners tent encampments on campaign. Here the khan held council and ceremony. The central court follows a Manchu habit of living on rises: the empress's Qingning Palace sits on a high platform above the emperor's Chongzheng Hall, and behind it the Phoenix Tower once ranked among the tallest buildings in town, later storing seals and portraits. The western court belongs largely to the Qianlong era, with a stage at Jiayin Hall and Wensu Pavilion built to house a copy of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries.

Hong Taiji declared the Qing dynasty here in 1636 and formally named the principal buildings. After the court moved to Beijing in 1644, Shenyang became a secondary capital. Kangxi and Qianlong stayed here on eastern tours. Qianlong's western additions around 1780, including Wensu Pavilion, fixed much of the plan visitors walk today.

From palace to museum

Collections were partly moved in the early twentieth century. From 1926 the buildings opened as a museum under changing names. The site entered the first batch of national protected monuments in 1961, became a World Heritage extension in 2004, and was rated a first-class national museum in 2017 according to the Shenyang guide. Exhibits cover early Qing court life, banners culture and palace architecture. Give the eastern court time; the octagonal hall and pavilion arc are the images most people remember.

Tickets, hours and getting there

Shenyang Bendibao listings for 2026 give an adult ticket of 50 yuan, with half-price categories for students and many seniors, and free entry for older seniors and young children under posted rules. Real-name reservation through the official museum WeChat channel is the usual requirement; third-party tickets are discouraged in local notices. Summer hours commonly run from 8:30 to 17:00 with last entry around 16:15 (about 10 April to 10 October). Winter hours start later and close earlier. Mondays are typically closed except legal holidays. Summer night openings appear in some 2026 notices; check the day's official post before you plan an evening visit.

Metro Line 1 to Huaiyuanmen Station (Exit B) is a short walk; Zhongjie Station also works. Buses serve the palace west gate area. The palace sits near Zhongjie shopping streets, so lunch is easy after a morning inside.

Pairing with tombs and mansions

The phrase "one palace, two tombs" points to this palace plus Zhaoling and Fuling. The Shenyang guide puts Mukden Palace on day one with Marshal Zhang's Mansion, and Beiling's Zhaoling on day two. Do not try to rush the palace, both tombs and the 9.18 museum into a single afternoon. Beijing's Forbidden City is a different scale; come here for Manchu court texture, not for a smaller copy of Beijing.

Before you go

  • Reserve real-name tickets on the official channel.
  • Check Monday closures and seasonal last-entry times.
  • Start with the eastern court and Dazheng Hall.
  • Wear shoes for brick courtyards; winter ice is slick.
  • Pair with Zhaoling on a separate half-day.
