Suining Travel Guide: Guangde Temple, Lingquan Temple and the Song Porcelain Museum
Suining, on the Fu River in the middle of the Sichuan Basin, is a calm one-or-two-day stop between Chengdu and Chongqing. Its two temples, Guangde and Lingquan, hold a local legend that Guanyin and her sisters were born here, and the free Sichuan Song Porcelain Museum displays one of the best hoards of Song ceramics found in China. Trains from Chengdu currently take about an hour; the new north building of Suining station opened on 11 October 2026 ahead of the Chengdu–Dazhou–Wanzhou high-speed line, due around September 2027.
The Guanyin connection
A folk song says one Guanyin sister lives at Lingquan Temple, another at Guangde Temple, and only the third went far away, to Putuo. Suining takes this seriously: the city brands itself the hometown of Guanyin, and the temple festivals around Guanyin's days in the lunar calendar are the busiest times at both temples. Even if the legend means little to you, it explains the crowds of local pilgrims and the incense.
Places worth visiting
Guangde Temple
Guangde Temple sits at the head of Wolong (Sleeping Dragon) Hill on the west side of the city. It was founded under the Tang as the Stone Buddha Temple and changed names repeatedly by imperial order, through the Tang and Song, before the Ming Zhengde emperor gave it the name Guangde. It has been a national key cultural relic since 2006.
Look for the Ming imperial-edict archway, the Shanji Pagoda, the Nine Dragon stele and a jade Buddha from Myanmar; the temple's "Five Treasures of Guanyin" square is where pilgrims gather. Entry has been free, with incense given at the gate, and listings give hours of about 08:30–17:00.
The Guangde entrance and Wolong Hill
The painted memorial archway marks the way in from the road, and paths behind the temple climb Wolong Hill. Allow an hour and a half for the temple, more if you walk up the hill.
Lingquan Temple
Lingquan Temple climbs Lingquan Hill on the edge of the city, with a long stone stairway up to a tall, many-eaved pavilion. It is a 4A scenic area like Guangde, and the climb gives views back over Suining. Go in the late afternoon for the light and fewer pilgrims, or on a Guanyin festival day for the opposite.
Sichuan Song Porcelain Museum
The museum exists because of a lucky dig: in 1991 villagers at Jinyu village in Suining turned up a Southern Song hoard of 1,005 objects, 985 of them porcelain, from several of the great Song kilns. One lotus-leaf-lidded jar has become a symbol of the city (its shape inspired the new station building). Entry is free but booked in advance through the museum's WeChat account; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:30, closed Mondays except public holidays.
Daying "China Dead Sea" and Shehong
In Daying County, a resort built on underground brine lets you float in salty water the way you would in the Dead Sea. It is a commercial water park more than a natural site, popular with families in summer. Worth it only if you want a pool day. In Shehong, the Chen Zi'ang reading platform remembers the Tang poet, who came from there.
Getting in and where to stay
- Rail: Suining station is on the Dazhou–Chengdu line and the Suining–Chongqing line, with fast trains to Chengdu in about an hour. The new north station building opened on 11 October 2026; the old building has closed.
- Coming soon: the Chengdu–Dazhou–Wanzhou high-speed railway, under construction since 2020, is planned to open around September 2027 and cut Chengdu to about 30 minutes.
- Road: National Highway 318 crosses the city.
Stay in the centre near the Fu River; both temples and the museum are a short taxi ride away.
When to come
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are pleasant. Summers are long, hot and humid, with most of the year's rain from May to September. Winters are mild but often grey and foggy.
Eating in Suining
Suining eats like the rest of central Sichuan: spicy, numbing and cheap. There is no single dish you must hunt down; eat at busy local restaurants near the river, where noodles and a few small plates cost little. Shehong, a county-level city in the prefecture, is home to the Tuopai baijiu distillery, and its liquor is on every banquet table.
How to arrange the route
One day from Chengdu: morning train, Song Porcelain Museum (booked), lunch, Guangde Temple in the afternoon, evening train back.
Two days: add Lingquan Temple on the second morning and, in summer, the Daying salt lake in the afternoon.
What to cut if short on time
Keep the museum and Guangde Temple. Lingquan is the third priority; the Daying resort is optional.
Things to confirm before you go
- Museum booking and Monday closure.
- Temple hours and any festival crowd controls.
- Which station building to use (the new north entrance since 11 October 2026).
Frequently asked questions
Is Suining worth a day trip from Chengdu?
Yes if you like ceramics or temple culture; the Song Porcelain Museum alone justifies the hour on the train.
Guangde or Lingquan Temple first?
Guangde is closer to the centre and historically richer; Lingquan has the better climb and view. With one, choose Guangde.
Is the Song Porcelain Museum free?
Yes, with advance booking and ID.
