Suzhou, Anhui Travel Guide: Huangzangyu Forest, Lingbi Stone and Dangshan Pear Blossom

This is Suzhou (宿州) in northern Anhui, not the garden city of Suzhou (苏州) in Jiangsu; the names sound alike in Mandarin, and travellers do book the wrong one. Anhui's Suzhou is a farming prefecture on the Huaibei plain, and its reasons to visit are seasonal and rural: the old-growth Huangzangyu forest in Xiao County, the scholar's stones of Lingbi, and pear blossom across Dangshan County in spring. If you came for gardens and canals, you want Suzhou in Jiangsu.

Getting in: the right Suzhou

  • Suzhou East station on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line is about 23 km from the city centre; it is a different station from Suzhou (Jiangsu) or Suzhou North.
  • Xiaoxian North and Dangshan South are on the Xuzhou–Lanzhou high-speed line, handy for Huangzangyu and the pear orchards.
  • Lingbi and Si County are on the slower Suzhou–Huai'an railway.

When booking, check the station name and province. Xuzhou, just over the Jiangsu border, is the big rail hub and the easiest base for Xiao County and Dangshan.

Places worth visiting

Huangzangyu National Forest Park

Huangzangyu lies on the southeastern edge of Xiao County, 26 km from the county town. The 31 km² valley is a national forest park and a 4A scenic area, and it matters for one reason: it holds one of the few well-preserved natural warm-temperate broadleaf forests left in northern Anhui, with more than 130 woody plant species and 58 bird species. The name means "the valley where the emperor hid", from a legend that Liu Bang, founder of the Han, sheltered here. Expect stone paths, a temple and shaded walking; spring and autumn are best. Allow half a day.

Lingbi: stones and the Chu–Han story

Lingbi County is China's "hometown of Lingbi stone", a dark, resonant limestone prized by scholars since the Song as a garden and desk stone; the county holds a stone culture festival and has markets full of rocks of every size. It also keeps a tomb attributed to Yu Ji, consort of Xiang Yu, who in the story of the Chu–Han war died at Gaixia. Note that the nationally protected Gaixia city site itself is in Guzhen County, part of neighbouring Bengbu.

Dangshan pear blossom

Dangshan County, on the old course of the Yellow River in the far northwest, is known nationally for its pears. In spring, usually around late March and early April, the orchards bloom white and the county holds a pear blossom festival. Dates move with the weather each year, so check the local announcement before travelling. In late summer and autumn, pears and pear syrup (a cough remedy) are sold everywhere.

Si County and Sizhou opera

Si County, in the east, is home to Sizhou opera, a local folk opera form recognised as intangible heritage; the county holds an opera festival. Performances are occasional, so it suits someone with a specific interest.

When to come

Spring for pear blossom and the forest; autumn for walking and fruit. Summers are hot and humid (July averages about 28 °C), with most rain from May to August. Winters are cold and damp, just above freezing in January.

Eating in Suzhou, Anhui

Northern Anhui food leans toward wheat: flatbreads, steamed buns and hearty soups. Street breakfasts include wrapped flatbreads stuffed with vegetables, like the one below. Dangshan pears and Xiao County grapes are the fruit to try in season.

How to arrange the route

Spring weekend from Xuzhou: day one, Dangshan for the pear blossom; day two, Huangzangyu by car or taxi from Xiaoxian North.

On the Beijing–Shanghai line: Suzhou East is a long way from the sights; only stop if you are heading to Lingbi.

What to cut if short on time

Keep one of Huangzangyu or the pear blossom, depending on season. Lingbi and Si County are for stone collectors and opera fans.

Things to confirm before you go

  • That your train ticket says Suzhou East (Anhui), not Suzhou (Jiangsu).
  • Pear blossom festival dates for the year.
  • Huangzangyu tickets and opening hours; no current official listing was found.
