Tieling Travel Guide: Yingang Academy, Longshou Mountain and the White Pagoda
Tieling, 20 minutes north of Shenyang by high-speed train, is a small, friendly northern Liaoning city that most Chinese know as a punchline from TV sketches and Li Xueqin's joke about "the end of the universe". A day here is cheap and easy. The core sights all sit in the old Yinzhou district and were all free in recent listings: Yingang Academy, the best-preserved old academy in the Northeast, where a 12-year-old Zhou Enlai studied in 1910; the city museum next door; Longshou Mountain park; and a Jin-dynasty white pagoda. Lunch is huoshao flatbread with refillable mutton soup.
Getting in and where to stay
The Harbin–Dalian high-speed line stops at Tieling West, about 20 minutes from Shenyang North. Tieling West is a long way from the old town, so take a taxi. Slower trains on the Shenyang–Dalian line stop at Tieling station, closer to the centre, in about 30–45 minutes from Shenyang. By car it is about 90 km on the Beijing–Harbin expressway.
Most people visit as a day trip from Shenyang. If you stay, choose Yinzhou District near Longshou Mountain; everything below is walkable or a short taxi ride apart.
Places worth visiting
Yingang Academy
Hao Yu, a censor who had accused the warlord Wu Sangui, was exiled to Tieling. He began teaching at his home inside the south gate in 1658. When he was recalled in 1675, after Wu's rebellion proved him right, he donated the school and named it Yingang Academy. It is the only old academy in the Northeast to survive, a national protected site with 15 Qing brick-and-timber rooms around small courtyards, including a shrine to Hao Yu. In spring 1910 the young Zhou Enlai studied here for half a year after following his uncle north, and since 1979 the academy has doubled as a memorial to him.
Recent listings give it as free with a quick registration at the door, open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:30, with free guided talks at 09:30 and 14:30.
Tieling Museum
Next door to the academy, the city museum opened in 1986 and holds nearly 5,000 objects, mostly excavated locally. Its two permanent galleries cover northern Liaoning's history and folk life, and a bronze yue axe is the prize piece. It is free with ID, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00. An hour is enough.
Longshou Mountain
"Dragon's Head Mountain" is the city's park, a 3 km ridge running north to south through Yinzhou that rears up at the Chai River like a dragon's head. Its highest point is only 156 m, so the climb is short. The Kangxi Emperor stopped here on a tour of the northeast. On the north peak, the small Ciqing Temple has a courtyard of halls and a two-storey gate tower rebuilt in 1921; the temple and two pagodas on the hill are provincial heritage sites. Roses cover the slopes in May, the maples turn in autumn, and local people come to feed the squirrels. It is open all day and free.
White Pagoda
The Yuantong Temple pagoda, known simply as the White Pagoda, was built in the Dading era of the Jin dynasty (1161–1189) and is said to be the oldest surviving pagoda in northern Liaoning. It is a solid, thirteen-storey brick pagoda about 36 m tall. Each face of the octagonal base carries one brick-carved character, and together they read "good weather for the harvest, peace for the nation". It stands at a street junction in Tonglong subdistrict and can be seen at any time.
Further out
With a car and a second day, local lists add the Lotus Lake wetland, the Qinghe wetland park, the old town of Kaiyuan and the steam locomotive park at Diaobingshan.
The new city
South of the old town, Tieling New City is mostly government buildings and wide plazas. It is pleasant for an evening walk but not a reason to come.
When to come
May brings the roses on Longshou Mountain and September–October the autumn colours, which are the best months. Summer is warm and fine. Winter is well below freezing, but the academy and museum are heated, and the hill is short enough for a quick walk in the snow.
Eating in Tieling
Huoshao, a small crisp flatbread baked by the dozen, eaten with mutton offal soup, is the classic Tieling meal. In 2024 a shop near the academy sold them for ¥1 each and refilled the soup from a kettle for free. Otherwise it is northeastern home cooking: stews, dumplings and big plates of vegetables.
How to arrange the route
- Morning: fast train from Shenyang North to Tieling West, taxi to the old town, Yingang Academy for the 09:30 talk, then the museum.
- Lunch: huoshao and mutton soup nearby.
- Afternoon: up Longshou Mountain, then past the White Pagoda, and back to Shenyang in the evening.
What to cut if short on time
With half a day, do the academy and Longshou Mountain. The museum is the first thing to drop, then the pagoda. Skip the wetlands unless you have a car.
Things to confirm before you go
- Academy and museum hours (both close on Mondays) and the guided talk times.
- Your return train, and whether it leaves from Tieling West or Tieling station.
- Weather and ice on the hill paths in winter.
