Tianmen Mountain: The City Peak with a Hole in the Cliff
Tianmen Mountain rises in Yongding District against Zhangjiajie city, main peak 1,518.6 metres, named for the natural opening near its summit. In 263 CE a cliff face opened; Wu ruler Sun Xiu took the omen and the place became the Gate of Heaven. The cave measures about 131.5 metres high, 57 wide and 60 deep. Tianmen became a national forest park in 1992 and opened as a scenic area in 2005. The classic visit once meant the 7,455-metre city cableway, a 60-metre glass skywalk, Guigu plank roads, and the Tongtian Avenue hairpins. Cableway sections have seen rebuild closures into 2026, so the exact ascent line can shift to express cave cable cars, escalators and shuttles. Always read the morning notice before you buy. This is a separate ticket from Wulingyuan. City pacing sits in the Zhangjiajie travel guide.
Tickets and route reality in 2026
Adult package prices are commonly listed near 285–288 yuan including insurance, with student and senior concessions on ID. Optional extras often include mountain escalators (around 32 yuan), short summit cable segments, and shoe covers for glass walks. Ticket windows frequently sell from about 07:30 with operations from 08:00; last sales can close mid-afternoon. Allow four to six hours including queues.
Through late 2025 and 2026, parts of the long city cableway have been closed or limited for rebuilding, with visitors steered onto Line C-style routes that use the Tianmen Cave express cableway and escalators through the mountain. Line packages and downhill shuttle options change with weather and works. Treat any blog that still assumes the uninterrupted 7,455-metre ride as outdated until you confirm the day's sold lines on the official channel or at the city station. Free shuttles between the city cableway area and the mountain gate appear when the long line is not the path up.
High wind, ice, fog and storms stop cable segments and can force route switches. Check notices the morning you go; a flexible afternoon plan beats a wasted prepaid slot in a gale.
Tianmen Cave, steps and escalators
From the cave plaza, 999 stone steps climb to the opening; your legs will remember them. A multi-stage escalator alternative is usually sold on site for those who want the cave without the full stair burn. Inside the cave mouth the scale is the point: stand back for the arch, then continue toward summit paths if your ticket and route include them. Stunt flying through the hole made global news in 1999, and wingsuit events still use the mountain; spectators should follow steward instructions and never cross barriers for a closer clip.
Glass skywalk and Guigu plank road
Near the summit, glass skywalks hang over the drop. Shoe covers are required and sold cheaply on site. If you already plan the Grand Canyon glass bridge, the guide's advice holds: on a short trip, one glass experience is enough. Guigu (Ghost Valley) plank roads offer cliffside walking with rails; they are dramatic without transparent floors. Move steadily, keep hands free of the rail when passing, and skip the skywalk entirely if heights are a hard no.
Tongtian Avenue
The Tongtian Avenue is a 10.77-kilometre ribbon of tight hairpins on the mountain road. When shuttles run that segment, the ride itself is part of the visit. In ice or heavy rain the road can close and routes collapse to cable-only patterns. Do not count on the hairpin shuttle until the day's board says it is open.
Where to base
Sleep in Yongding for a Tianmen day. Wulingyuan hotels add a morning transfer you do not need. Pair Tianmen as day one or day four of a Zhangjiajie trip so forest-park days stay centred on Wulingyuan town.
Who should skip the skywalk
Anyone with strong vertigo can still enjoy the cave mouth, temple fragments and non-glass plank sections, then stop. Pushing onto transparent floors to "keep up" ruins the day. Families with small children should hold hands on steps and skip edge selfies. Tianmen is a full-day mountain product next to the city; treat it with the same respect you give Wulingyuan's cliffs, even when the skyline of Yongding sits in view below.
Things to confirm before you go
- Which ascent/descent lines are actually sold that morning.
- Wind and weather closures.
- Whether you want the escalator instead of 999 steps.
- Shoe covers and any summit extras you care about.
- Afternoon train buffer if you depart Zhangjiajie West the same day.
Wind, fog and city-base logistics
The cableway stops in high wind. Fog can erase the skyline toward Yongding even when the cave remains open. Stay in Yongding when Tianmen leads or closes the trip, so you are not crossing to Wulingyuan town the same exhausted evening. Eat a real meal before or after; summit snack prices and queues punish last-minute hunger.
Quick decisions
Is Tianmen still worth it during cableway works?
Yes if cave, plank roads and summit walks are open on your date. Confirm the route; do not arrive expecting a specific historic cable sequence.
Glass skywalk or Grand Canyon bridge?
Pick one on a short trip. Tianmen's skywalk pairs with the cave day; the canyon bridge is a separate Cili County outing.
How long do I need?
A full day. Half days only work with early entry and no major queues.
What next?
Shift to Wulingyuan for Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, or keep a lighter day for Huanglong Cave.
