Diecai Hill: The Best Climb for a View over Guilin

Diecai Hill (叠彩山, "Folded Brocade Hill") gives the widest panorama in central Guilin for the least effort: about 30 minutes of steps from the gate on Binjiang Road to Bright-Moon Peak, about 223 metres above sea level, with the Li River, Fubo Hill and the city's karst peaks spread out below. In 2026 the adult ticket is 25 yuan at the gate, or about 23 yuan booked online. From April to October it opens 07:00 to 18:30, with last entry at 18:00. From November to March it closes at 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. Allow an hour to an hour and a half.

Is it worth it?

It depends what you've already done. Elephant Trunk Hill is the one everyone photographs, but it is a low hill seen from the riverbank. Diecai is where you go up and look out. If you want one city panorama and only have time for one hill besides Elephant Trunk, this is a better choice than Fubo Hill next door, because from Diecai you can see Fubo in the view.

Skip it if your Guilin city time is a single morning before the Li River cruise, or if you're already climbing Duxiu Peak that day. Two summits in one Guilin afternoon, in summer humidity, is more than most people enjoy.

The climb

The hill takes its name from the layered bands of rock in its cliffs, said to look like folded brocade. The path is stone steps all the way, steep in places but short.

  1. From the gate, the path climbs past carved inscriptions on the rock faces. The hill has been a place for poets and officials to leave their writing for centuries.
  2. Wind Cave (风洞) is a short passage through the hill about halfway up. A breeze blows through it even on still days, which is very welcome in July. Its walls carry carvings and Buddhist figures.
  3. Bright-Moon Peak (明月峰) is the top, with a pavilion. Fubo Hill and the river are below you to the south, and the peaks around the city stand out on a clear day.

Coming down, you can walk back the same way. In 2026 listings a slide down the hillside is also sold separately, about 20 yuan, ending near Mulong Cave by the river. Check at the gate whether it is running.

When to go

The view is only as good as the air. Autumn and the days after rain give the clearest long views. In summer haze the distant peaks fade, and humidity makes the steps hard work, so go at opening rather than at noon. The summit pavilion is crowded on holiday mornings, while late afternoon is usually calmer, provided you're inside before last entry.

Wet stone is the main hazard. Wear shoes with grip and take water in summer.

Photos from the top

The classic shot is from Bright-Moon Peak, looking south over Fubo Hill to the bend of the Li River, with the city's peaks behind. In the morning the sun is over the river, so you may get haze and glare. Late afternoon light is softer and falls across the hills. A phone is fine. A short zoom helps pick out the distant peaks. The space around the pavilion is small, so take your picture and make room for the next person.

Getting there and what's nearby

The gate is at 27 Binjiang Road, north of the centre along the west bank of the Li. From the downtown hotels it is a short taxi ride, or a walk of half an hour or so along the river past Fubo Hill.

A good afternoon in town: Diecai first, then a walk south along the river, then the Two Rivers and Four Lakes evening boat if you're staying in Guilin that night. If you'd rather have history than a view, swap Diecai for Duxiu Peak and Prince Jing's Mansion, which are close by.
