Jincheng Travel Guide: Huangcheng Xiangfu, Wangmangling and the Southern Taihang

Jincheng, in the southeast corner of Shanxi on the Henan border, is a coal city with two very good reasons to visit. Huangcheng Xiangfu is a walled family estate of 640 rooms built by the clan of Chen Tingjing, the Kangxi Emperor's tutor and chief editor of the Kangxi Dictionary. Wangmangling, on the Taihang cliffs at the Henan border, is one of the most dramatic mountain drives in North China. Give each its own day. Since December 2020 high-speed trains reach Jincheng East from Zhengzhou in about an hour, so this corner is easier to reach than it looks on a map.

Huangcheng Xiangfu, the Chancellor's estate

The estate covers about 10 hectares on Phoenix Hill in Huangcheng village, Beiliu town, Yangcheng County. The Chen family started as farmers, made money in coal and then poured it into education; across the Ming and Qing they produced dozens of officials and poets. Two building phases explain what you see:

  • The inner city (1632–33). Walls went up under the last Ming emperor to protect the family from raiders. Its keep, the Heshan Tower, is seven storeys and about 30 metres tall, entered only by a bridge on the second floor, with a well, food stores and tunnels underneath. Local history says it saved the villagers during a raid shortly after it was finished.
  • The outer city (completed 1703). Built for Chen Tingjing, with the scholar's residence, gardens and a stone archway recording the family's examination successes. The Kangxi Emperor visited twice and wrote plaques for the house.

Inside you'll also find the Chen ancestral hall, the 1.1-hectare Zhiyuan Garden, the "hidden soldiers" rooms dug into the hillside, and a Chinese Dictionary Museum opened in 2016 with 128 editions of the Kangxi Dictionary.

How to see it

Allow at least half a day; the courtyards stack up the hill, and a hurried visit becomes a blur of identical doorways. Climb to the inner city first, while your legs are fresh, then work down through the outer city and finish on the old trade street. The estate is a 5A site and has hosted about ten film and TV productions, including the 2001 CCTV drama Kangxi Dynasty, so weekends and holidays bring heavy tour groups. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer. Check the current ticket price and opening hours on the official channel before you go.

Huangcheng Xiangfu is a long drive from central Jincheng, with no convenient direct public link for most visitors, so a hired car or a taxi for the day is the practical choice.

Wangmangling and Xiyagou

Wangmangling sits on the border between Lingchuan County and Huixian in Henan, a national geopark and 4A scenic area on the edge of the Taihang escarpment. The name comes from a Han dynasty legend about the usurper Wang Mang camping here while chasing Liu Xiu. What you come for is the drop: sheer cliffs, ridgetop viewpoints and sunrise over a sea of cloud when conditions are right.

Next to it, the village of Xiyagou is famous for its road. Cut off by cliffs, villagers spent about 30 years carving a 7.5-kilometre tunnel road through the rock, largely by hand with hammers and chisels. Driving it is the highlight for many visitors.

Plan it as a full day with a driver, and watch the weather. Fog can hide the cliffs completely, summer storms close mountain roads, and winter ice makes the cliff paths hard work. If you want sunrise, stay overnight near the scenic area.

When to come to Jincheng

April to June and September to early November. The climate is dry continental, with cold, very dry winters (January averages around −2 °C) and hot, humid summers when over two-thirds of the year's rain falls. Autumn colour on the Taihang ridges is the best season for Wangmangling. Avoid national holidays at Huangcheng Xiangfu.

Getting in and where to stay

  • High-speed rail: Jincheng East opened on 12 December 2020 on the Zhengzhou–Taiyuan line. Trains take about an hour to Zhengzhou and about two hours to Taiyuan, with stops at Gaoping East and Changzhi on the way north.
  • Conventional rail: Jincheng station, in the southeast of the city, is on the older Taiyuan–Jiaozuo railway.
  • Air: There is no commercial airport. The nearest are Zhengzhou, Changzhi and Luoyang.

Base yourself in the city for flexibility, and add a night near Wangmangling only if you want sunrise. Neighbouring Changzhi is the next stop north on the same line, and Jiaozuo is just across the Henan border.

Eating in Jincheng

Southern Shanxi is noodle country. Expect knife-cut noodles, buckwheat dishes, vinegar on every table and hearty stews. Restaurants near Huangcheng Xiangfu are busy at lunch and tuned to tour groups; back in the city, small noodle shops are quicker and cheaper. Ask the price before ordering anything sold by weight.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: Arrive at Jincheng East. Afternoon in town or rest.

Day 2: Huangcheng Xiangfu by hired car, starting early. Back to the city for dinner.

Day 3: Wangmangling and the Xiyagou road, a full day in the mountains if the forecast is clear. Swap days 2 and 3 to catch the better weather.

From here, continue north to Pingyao in Jinzhong by high-speed train via Taiyuan, or south to Zhengzhou.

What to cut if short on time

Keep Huangcheng Xiangfu. Drop the mountain day if fog is forecast, since the views are the whole point. City sights are not worth a separate block.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Huangcheng Xiangfu's current ticket price, hours and any booking rule.
  • Road and weather status for Wangmangling, especially after rain or snow.
  • A driver for both day trips, with an agreed return time.
  • Which station your train uses, Jincheng East or Jincheng.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Jincheng?

Two full days: one for Huangcheng Xiangfu and one for Wangmangling. Add a buffer day if you are chasing clear mountain weather.

Is Huangcheng Xiangfu like Pingyao?

How do I get from Zhengzhou to Jincheng?

High-speed trains run from Zhengzhou to Jincheng East in about an hour on the Zhengzhou–Taiyuan line.
