Jinzhong Travel Guide: Pingyao Ancient City, the Merchant Compounds and Shuanglin Temple
Jinzhong is the prefecture south of Taiyuan that contains Pingyao, the best-preserved walled county town in China and a UNESCO site since 1997. Plan two nights inside the walls. That gives you the wall, the old draft banks and the lantern-lit streets in the evening, plus a half-day out to either the painted clay figures of Shuanglin Temple or the Qiao Family Compound, the courtyard mansion from Raise the Red Lantern. The prefecture seat, Yuci, is a modern suburb of Taiyuan with little reason to stop.
Pingyao Ancient City
The Ming wall, built from 1370, still runs the full circuit around a town where more than 20,000 people live, and the street grid inside is intact. What gives Pingyao its story is money. In the 19th century Shanxi merchants ran China's first draft banks (piaohao) from here, moving funds between cities on paper instead of in escorted carts of silver.
What to see
- Rishengchang on West Street, usually called China's first piaohao, was a dye shop that turned to banking around 1823, and it is now the China Piaohao Museum. Labels are mostly in Chinese, so an audio guide helps.
- The wall. Climb near the South Gate for the classic view over grey tile roofs. A full circuit takes a few hours with no shade.
- The Market Tower over South Street, the county yamen (magistrate's office) and the Confucian Temple, whose main hall dates from the Jin dynasty.
Walking the streets is free. The 22 paid sites, including the wall, Rishengchang, the yamen and the Confucian Temple, share one through ticket, listed in 2026 at 125 yuan full price and valid for three days. Sites keep daytime hours (a spring 2026 notice gave 08:00 to 18:00), while shops and restaurants stay open late. Full details are on the Pingyao Ancient City page.
Pace
Go to the paid sites early, before the tour groups arrive mid-morning, and save your legs for the evening, when the town looks its best. Two days lets you use the three-day ticket properly without rushing. National holidays are very crowded; weekdays in spring and autumn are much better.
Shuanglin Temple
Six kilometres southwest of Pingyao, Shuanglin looks like a small fort from outside. Its ten halls hold about 2,052 painted clay figures, most from the Ming, including a famous guardian Weituo in the Thousand Buddha Hall and a many-armed Guanyin. It is not on the Pingyao ticket; 2026 listings give 35 yuan full price. Allow up to two hours, and bring a small torch for the dim halls where permitted. It is usually far quieter than the walled town. See the Shuanglin Temple page.
The merchant compounds
The families who ran the banks built enormous walled homes in the countryside.
Qiao Family Compound
In Qi County, about 30 km northeast of Pingyao, this was home to the financier Qiao Zhiyong (1818–1907) and his clan. Building began in 1756, and the courtyards are laid out like the double-happiness character. Zhang Yimou filmed Raise the Red Lantern here, and the 2006 TV drama Qiao's Grand Courtyard made it a domestic hit. Its 5A rating was withdrawn in 2019 for over-commercialisation. The 2026 full-price ticket is listed at 115 yuan, with hours of 08:30 to 18:00 from May. Expect crowds and plenty of shops. Details on the Qiao Family Compound page.
Wang Family Compound
In Lingshi County, south of Pingyao, the Wang compound is much bigger: 231 courtyards and 2,078 rooms on a terraced hillside. It is the more dramatic setting and the less crowded of the two, but it is further away. Choose one compound; two in a day blur into each other.
When to come to Jinzhong
April to June and September to October. Central Shanxi is hot in summer, with little shade on the brick streets, and very cold and dry in winter, when the wall steps can be icy. Spring brings dust. Winter is otherwise atmospheric and quiet, with lower crowds, if you dress for it.
Getting in and where to stay
- High-speed rail: Pingyao Gucheng station, on the Datong–Xi'an line, is about 10 km from the walls. Bus 108 runs from the station square towards the gates, and a taxi takes about 20 minutes.
- Conventional rail: The old Pingyao station is closer to town.
- From Taiyuan: Taiyuan South to Pingyao Gucheng is a short hop, and the Qiao compound sits on the road between them.
Stay in a courtyard guesthouse inside the walls. Cars can't drive in, so ask which gate is nearest. Taiyuan is the airport and hub; further south, Linfen has the Hukou Waterfall.
Eating in Jinzhong
Shanxi is wheat and vinegar country. In Pingyao, try Pingyao beef, the local cured beef sold in vacuum packs everywhere, knife-cut noodles, and wantuo, buckwheat jelly served with vinegar and chilli. Restaurants on the busiest stretch of South Street charge more; a block or two away, menus and prices are calmer. Mature vinegar shops offer tastings.
How to arrange the route
Day 1: Arrive at Pingyao Gucheng, check in, walk the wall near the South Gate in late afternoon, dinner and the evening streets.
Day 2: Rishengchang and the other banks first thing, the yamen and Confucian Temple, a rest at midday, then Shuanglin Temple by taxi in the afternoon.
Day 3: Qiao Family Compound on the way back to Taiyuan, or the Wang compound if you are heading south.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, stay inside Pingyao: the wall, Rishengchang and the evening streets. Drop the second compound first, then Shuanglin unless sculpture is your thing. Never skip the night in Pingyao for a day trip from Taiyuan; the evening is the point.
Things to confirm before you go
- Through-ticket price, validity and hours for your dates.
- Qiao and Shuanglin hours and ticket prices on the day.
- A driver or taxi back to Pingyao from the compounds.
- Which gate your guesthouse is closest to.
