Huaguoshan, Lianyungang's Flower and Fruit Mountain

Huaguoshan rises in Haizhou District of Lianyungang, part of the coastal Yuntai range. Tang and Song writers knew peaks here as Cangwu or Qingfeng. Modern tourism leans on the claim that this landscape inspired the Flower and Fruit Mountain of Journey to the West, home of Sun Wukong. A 1982 academic meeting on the novel backed the Lianyungang identification, though Shanxi and Fujian keep rival claims. The scenic area spreads across forested granite ridges with temples, a waterfall cave and Jiangsu's highest summit. Give it most of a day, then keep Liandao for a separate beach and sea-wall day.

Peaks, cave and temple

Chinese planning figures describe a core scenic area of roughly 13 square kilometres inside a much larger mountain plan. Yunu Peak, the Jade Maiden Peak, reaches about 625 metres and is the highest point in Jiangsu, a province that is otherwise mostly flat. Water Curtain Cave is the legend centrepiece, a recess behind seasonal waterfall spray where stories place the monkey king's court. Flow depends on recent rain. Sanyuan Palace is the main temple cluster on the climb. Stone steps dominate. Wear proper shoes.

Wild macaques live on the mountain. Keep food sealed and bags closed. Weekdays feel calmer than holiday weekends. Shuttle buses inside the scenic area may link lower gates with higher trailheads. Confirm routes on the day's notice.

Visiting strategy

Choose between a cave-and-temple focus and a summit push if energy is limited. Trying every side valley after a late start usually ends in sore knees and thin light. Photographers like soft morning mist on granite. Summer heat and the June to August rain peak make afternoon climbs sticky. May to June and September to October suit most walkers.

Kongwang Shan in Haizhou holds Eastern Han cliff carvings and works as a short history add-on on arrival afternoon, not as a substitute for Huaguoshan itself. The Lianyungang travel guide places that hill, this mountain and Liandao into a three-day frame.

Tickets, hours and getting there

Opening times, internal shuttles and ticket prices follow the scenic area's board and booking channel. This page quotes no yuan amounts. Carry ID. High-speed rail serves Lianyungang station on coastal and inland lines. Lianyungang Huaguoshan International Airport opened in 2021 in Guanyun County, more than 20 kilometres from the centre. Taxis and ride-hailing are the simplest way to the mountain gate. For an early start, lodge in Haizhou or near the entrance. Liandao across the sea wall suits beach days better.

Before you go

  • Pack water and grip shoes for long stair flights.
  • Keep monkeys away from snacks.
  • Save Liandao for another day.
  • Read the Lianyungang travel guide for seafood pricing by weight and port context.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the real home of the Monkey King?

It is the location most often identified with the novel's mountain in Chinese tourism and in a 1982 scholarly discussion, yet other provinces contest the claim. Treat it as cultural landscape, not archaeology of a fictional cave.

How long do I need?

Most of one day. Half a day only if you limit yourself to the cave and main temple.

Huaguoshan or Liandao if I have one day?

Mountain if you want stairs and story sites. Island if you want beach and sea wall. They reward separate days.

How hard is Yunu Peak?

It is a sustained stair climb to Jiangsu's high point, not a technical scramble. Pace yourself and carry water.

Story landscape versus hiking reality

Gift shops lean hard on Monkey King imagery. The physical visit is granite stairs, temple incense and a cave whose waterfall may be thin after dry weeks. Enjoy the folklore frame, then hike on the mountain's own terms. Fog can erase coastal views from Yunu Peak even when the summit register is open.

After the descent, seafood dinners belong in Lianyun District nearer the port and Liandao approach. Station-area noodle shops cover simpler meals if you sleep inland for another early mountain start.

Weather buffers

Jiangsu's coastal mountains catch summer storms. If lightning or heavy rain closes upper trails, shift to Sanyuan Palace and lower paths, then move the summit to another morning. Winter clear days can be fine for stairs, yet ice on shaded steps needs care. Always read the gate board for temporary closures before you climb.
