Putian Travel Guide: Meizhou Island and the Mazu Ancestral Temple
Most visitors to Putian are heading for Meizhou Island, where the sea goddess Mazu is said to have been born and where her ancestral temple draws pilgrims from across Fujian, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Bus K09 runs from Putian Station to Wenjia pier, and boats cross to the island every 20 minutes from early morning until 18:00. One full day covers the temple and a stretch of coast; stay overnight on the island if you want the temple before the tour groups arrive.
Who Mazu is, and why the island matters
Mazu began as Lin Moniang, a young woman from Meizhou in the tenth century who, in the traditional account, protected fishermen and sailors. After her death she was worshipped as a sea goddess, and the cult spread with Fujianese seafarers along the coast and overseas. Mazu belief and customs were added to UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2009. The Meizhou temple is regarded as the ancestral seat, which is why temples abroad send delegations here and why festival days can be very crowded.
The ferry, step by step
- To the pier: bus K09 links Putian Station with Wenjia pier; a 2025 timetable listed the first bus from the station at 06:30 and the last at 17:50. A taxi is quicker if you are carrying luggage.
- Tickets: you buy a return boat ticket and the island entry together at Wenjia, showing ID. There is no ticket office for the return trip on the island, so keep the ticket.
- Sailings: since April 2024 the operator runs one timetable all year. Boats leave Wenjia from 07:20 to 18:00 and Meizhou from 07:00 to 17:40, roughly every 20 minutes. Evening boats leave Meizhou at 18:20, 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00.
- Weather: wind and typhoons can stop sailings at short notice. The operator posts changes on its WeChat accounts; follow the pier staff on the day.
Places worth visiting
Meizhou Mazu Temple
Island buses run from the pier to the temple. The complex climbs a hillside in stages, from the gates and older halls to the large statue of Mazu looking out to sea at the top. Allow two to three hours if you want to watch the worship rather than just walk through. Incense, firecrackers and processions are normal here; keep a respectful distance from rituals and ask before photographing worshippers.
Coastal rock parks
Away from the temple, Meizhou has granite boulders and rocky headlands eroded into odd shapes by wind and waves. These parks are the afternoon plan after the temple. Some sections have their own gates; check what your island ticket covers.
The west coast
The western shore is quieter, with beaches and evening light over the water. It is the reason to stay a night: once the day visitors have caught the last regular boats, the island slows down.
Wenjia pier
On holiday mornings and festival days the queue at Wenjia can be long. Arriving for the first sailings, or on a weekday, saves a lot of time.
On the mainland
Putian city has Guanghua Temple, one of Fujian's older Buddhist monasteries, which is a good use of a spare morning ashore. Otherwise the mainland is mainly where you sleep and change transport.
When to come to Putian
October to December and March to May are the most comfortable months. Summers are hot and humid, and typhoons between July and September can cancel boats. The big Mazu festivals fall on her birthday, the 23rd day of the third lunar month, and on the anniversary of her death on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month; they are spectacular and very crowded. Check the lunar dates for your year before booking; some travellers plan around them, others avoid them.
Getting in and where to stay
Putian Station is on the coastal railway between Fuzhou and Xiamen, with fast trains in both directions; Quanzhou is just to the south. For one day, a hotel near Putian Station is the practical base. For an overnight on Meizhou, book a guesthouse on the island and travel light, since you will be carrying bags onto the boat. Ningde and its mudflats are further north.
Eating in Putian
Putian, or Xinghua, has its own cooking. Putian braised noodles (lor mee) and Xinghua rice vermicelli are the dishes to try, and seafood is everywhere, including on the island. Restaurants near the temple get busy at lunch, so eat early or late. Putian is also known for lychees and longans in summer.
How to arrange the route
One day: early train or bus to Wenjia, temple in the morning, coastal parks after lunch, back on a regular boat before 17:40.
Two days: cross in the afternoon, sunset on the west coast, temple at opening the next morning, back to the mainland by lunch.
Three days: add Guanghua Temple and a slow mainland morning, then continue to Quanzhou or Fuzhou.
What to cut if short on time
Keep the temple. Cut the far coastal parks next, then the mainland. If wind cancels the boats, Guanghua Temple and a Putian noodle lunch are the fallback.

- Combined boat and island ticket price and discount rules on the official Mazu temple site.
