Puyang Travel Guide: The First Dragon, Qi City and a Day in Northeast Henan
Puyang is an oil and petrochemical city on the north bank of the Yellow River, and most of it looks the part. What makes a stop worthwhile is archaeology: in 1987 excavators at Xishuipo found a Neolithic burial with a dragon and a tiger laid out in clam shells, dated to more than 6,400 years ago and promoted ever since as "the First Dragon of China". A replica sits in Puyang Museum, the Spring and Autumn period ruins of Qi City are in town, and high-speed trains from Zhengzhou East take under an hour. One day is enough for most people.
Is Puyang worth a stop?
It depends on what you are after. If you are travelling the Henan heritage circuit for early Chinese history, Puyang adds something you will not see elsewhere: the shell dragon, one of the oldest dragon images known, and the town's claim to be one of the places where Chinese civilisation took shape. Puyang also has a long acrobatics tradition centred on Dongbeizhuang village. If you only want old streets and big monuments, Kaifeng and Anyang are the better choices, and Puyang can be skipped.
Places worth visiting
Puyang Museum and the shell dragon
This is the main reason to come. The museum's centrepiece is the reproduction of the Xishuipo burial: a man flanked by a dragon on one side and a tiger on the other, both made of arranged clam shells. Scholars have read the arrangement as an early cosmogram, and the find is the basis of Puyang's "Hometown of Chinese Dragons" title. The original excavation site, in Puyang County, is a separate trip; local guidance says visits need booking in advance. Check museum opening days before you go, as Henan museums commonly close one weekday.
Qi City ruins
Qicheng, the remains of a walled town of the Wei state in the Spring and Autumn period, is a nationally protected site inside the city. Earthen walls and a platform associated with alliance meetings between states are the main features, set in a park. It is quiet, takes an hour or so, and makes a natural pair with the museum. The Henan tourism department suggests doing Qicheng first and the museum second, which works well.
Pushui Park
Puyang has invested heavily in water and green space, and Pushui Park is the pleasant result: lakes, footpaths and locals exercising in the early morning. It is a good place to fill an hour before a train, nothing more.
Longcheng Plaza and the city
The name means Dragon City Plaza, in keeping with Puyang's dragon branding. In the evening it fills with square dancers and families. For a show, Puyang stages acrobatics, including a modern water-show production; check what is running during your stay rather than assuming a nightly performance.
Further out
Puyang's counties hold sites tied to legendary rulers and early history, including the tomb attributed to Cangjie, the mythical inventor of Chinese writing, and places linked with Emperor Shun. The Yellow River bank to the south has wetland parks. These need a car and a strong interest in the period.
When to come to Puyang
Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Spring can be dry and windy with dust; summer is hot, with most of the year's rain falling in July and August; winters are cold and fairly dry. Museum visits work in any season, so weather matters mainly for the outdoor ruins and parks.
Getting in and where to stay
- High-speed rail: Puyang East is on the Zhengzhou–Jinan high-speed line. The fastest trains from Zhengzhou East take about 52 minutes.
- From the station: Puyang East sits outside the centre, so plan on a taxi or city bus into town.
- Conventional rail: Puyang Station handles slower services.
- Where to stay: a hotel in Hualong District keeps you close to the museum, Qicheng and the parks. Stay near Puyang East only for a very early train.
Combine with Anyang to the west for the Yinxu Shang capital, or with Zhengzhou as the hub. Liaocheng in Shandong is just across the provincial border to the east.
Eating in Puyang
Food is northeast Henan home cooking: hand-pulled and braised noodles, stewed dishes and steamed buns. Around the parks and plazas you will find simple restaurants busy with locals in the evening, which are a better bet than hotel dining. The local snack to look for is Puyang zhuangmo, a pan-fried flatbread stuffed with minced meat and cut into wedges.
How to arrange the route
Day trip from Zhengzhou: morning train to Puyang East, Qicheng ruins, lunch, Puyang Museum in the afternoon, a walk in Pushui Park, evening train back.
Overnight: add Longcheng Plaza at night and, if booked, the Xishuipo site or a county excursion the next morning before moving on to Anyang.
What to cut if short on time
Keep the museum. Qicheng is the second priority. Parks and plazas are the first things to drop, and the county sites only make sense with a car and a specific interest.
Things to confirm before you go
- Puyang Museum opening days and any booking requirement.
- Whether Xishuipo can be visited and how to book.
- Train times between Zhengzhou East and Puyang East.
- Acrobatics show dates if you want to see one.
