Shaoyang Travel Guide: Getting to Langshan and Planning the Danxia Days

The reason to come to Shaoyang, in southwest Hunan, is Langshan, a red sandstone landscape in Xinning County that is part of the China Danxia World Heritage Site. It is not in the city: there is no railway station at Langshan, so you take a train to Shaoyang and then a bus of about two and a half hours to Xinning. Plan two nights in Xinning for Bajiaozhai, Tianyi Alley, Chili Peak and a bamboo raft on the Fuyi River.

Langshan's four areas

Langshan was inscribed in 2010 with other Danxia sites across southern China; its highest point is only 818 m, but the cliffs and towers rise straight out of farmland. The scenic area has four main parts:

  • Bajiaozhai: the high viewpoint over a "sea" of rounded Danxia peaks, best at sunrise or after rain, when clouds fill the valleys.
  • Tianyi Alley: a slot between cliffs, so narrow that only a strip of sky shows above.
  • Chili Peak: a single red pillar shaped like a chilli, the signature image of Langshan.
  • Fuyi River: bamboo rafts drift past cliffs and farmland, the slowest and easiest of the four.

A common order is Chili Peak, Tianyi Alley, Bajiaozhai and then the Fuyi River; another starts at Bajiaozhai, then Chili Peak, Tianyi Alley and Zixia Cave. Two areas per day is comfortable.

Places worth visiting

Langshan cliffs

The cliffs are the defining feature: walls of red sandstone streaked black by water, with trails and plank paths fixed along some of them. The walks around Chili Peak and Tianyi Alley stay low and pass under the cliffs, so they are good in heat or light rain.

The view from Bajiaozhai, over dozens of rounded peaks, is the classic Langshan panorama. To see it at sunrise you need to sleep in Xinning and get going before dawn; a cloud sea is down to luck, most likely after rain in spring and autumn. The climb is steep in places.

Shaoyang Tower

If you spend a night in Shaoyang city before or after Langshan, the tower, lit up at night, is the main evening sight. It is a pleasant stop, but it is no substitute for a day in Xinning.

Fuyi River raft

The bamboo raft on the Fuyi River gives the cliffs from water level and is the easiest part of Langshan, suitable for older travellers and children. In 2025 the scenic area increased its raft capacity, but holiday queues can still be long; go in the morning.

When to come to Shaoyang

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are best: mild weather for walking and the most chance of mist in the peaks after rain. Summer is hot and humid, and exposed rock is tiring at midday, though the raft is pleasant. Winters are damp and chilly but quiet.

Getting in and where to stay

  • By rail: high-speed and conventional trains reach Shaoyang from Changsha and Guangzhou. Check which Shaoyang station your ticket uses.
  • To Xinning: buses from Shaoyang South Bus Station run about every 40 minutes from 07:00 to 18:00, according to a 2025 report; air-conditioned coaches take about two and a half hours. Ride-hailing to Xinning or the scenic area's North Gate is also possible.
  • In Xinning: city buses 2 or 6 run from town to the North Gate, where sightseeing buses connect the scenic areas. Some areas are also served by local county buses; check at your hotel.
  • Where to stay: Xinning town or guesthouses near the scenic area for an early start. Stay in Shaoyang city only for a late train.

Yongzhou is south, Loudi northeast, and Huaihua west. Guilin is across the border in Guangxi.

Eating in Shaoyang

Southwest Hunan cooking is hot and smoky: chilli-fried pork, smoked and cured meats, tofu dishes and pickled vegetables. In Xinning, farm restaurants near the scenic area serve hearty set meals. Restaurants that are full of local families are usually the safest choice.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: train to Shaoyang, bus to Xinning, a short walk at Chili Peak if time allows, night in Xinning.

Day 2: Bajiaozhai at sunrise, Tianyi Alley in the afternoon.

Day 3: Fuyi River raft in the morning, bus back to Shaoyang and onward.

What to cut if short on time

With one full day in Xinning, do Bajiaozhai in the morning and Chili Peak or Tianyi Alley in the afternoon. Shaoyang city sights are the first to go.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Bus times between Shaoyang and Xinning, and the last bus back.
  • Langshan tickets, sightseeing bus coverage and raft hours.
  • Weather; heavy rain can close the raft.
