Suihua Travel Guide: The New Harbin–Yichun Line, Wanglongshan and the Black-Soil Plain

Suihua is a farming prefecture just north of Harbin, and for most travellers it is a place you pass through rather than a destination. That passing-through just got faster: the Harbin–Yichun high-speed railway opened on 28 September 2026, with a new Suihua South station 42 minutes from Harbin and a Qing'an South station near Wanglongshan National Forest Park. If you are heading north to the forests of Yichun, Suihua is a fair place to break the trip for a forest walk or a look at the rich black-soil farmland, but it has no major sights of its own.

What the prefecture is like

Suihua covers 35,211 km² of the northern Songnen Plain, from the Songhua River in the south to the edge of the Lesser Khingan hills in the northeast, with about 3.5 million people. The Hulan River and its tributaries drain it. Agriculture and food processing run the economy: rice, soybeans, sugar beet, dairy. Its county towns (Hailun, Anda, Zhaodong, Qing'an, Wangkui and others) are farm-service towns. The city seat was set up in 1885 on what was then empty land, and the urban core, Beilin District, has around 700,000 people.

Places worth visiting

Wanglongshan National Forest Park, Qing'an

The prefecture's main nature area is Wanglongshan National Forest Park in Qing'an County, on the Lesser Khingan foothills. With Qing'an South now on the high-speed line, it is the easiest stop on the new railway before Yichun. Expect mixed forest, trails and a summer resort feel; facilities are seasonal, so check opening before a winter visit.

The centre of Beilin District is a planned grid around People's Square. Jinguishan, a leisure park on the city's edge, is the local weekend escape. There is little else to see, which is fine if you just want an evening and a meal on the way north.

County towns and history

Wangkui keeps the former home of Lin Feng, a Communist leader in the northeast. Anda has the site of a special test ground of Japan's Unit 731, the biological-warfare unit headquartered in Harbin; the main museum on Unit 731 is in Harbin itself. Paleolithic tools found at Hailun and Zhaodong show how long people have lived on this plain, though there is nothing on display locally for a casual visitor.

Getting in and where to stay

  • Harbin–Yichun high-speed line: stations in the prefecture are Suihua South and Qing'an South. Harbin to Suihua South takes from 42 minutes; Harbin to Yichun West from 1 hr 46 min. Up to 38 trains a day ran when the line opened.
  • Conventional rail: Suihua station, in the east of the city, is on the Harbin–Jiamusi and Harbin–Heihe lines, useful for Heihe on the Russian border.
  • Road: Harbin is 91 km south by expressway.

Most travellers are better off sleeping in Harbin or Yichun and stopping in Suihua for a few hours.

When to come

June to September. July averages about 22 °C and is the wettest month; January averages about -20 °C, and winter is long and dry. The new railway runs year-round, so a snowy day stop is possible, but forest trails may be closed.

Eating in Suihua

Suihua is rice and soybean country, and the food is northeastern home cooking: stews with glass noodles, sour cabbage with pork, dumplings, and good plain rice. Local dairy and rice brands are sold all over the province. Restaurants near the old railway station and People's Square are cheap and filling.

How to arrange the route

Harbin to Yichun with a stop: morning train to Qing'an South, a few hours in Wanglongshan, late train on to Yichun West.

Harbin day trip: not really worth it unless you have a specific interest; Harbin's own sights are stronger.

What to cut if short on time

Skip Suihua altogether if you are short on time; take the train straight through to Yichun's forests. Keep it for a broken journey or a forest stop at Qing'an.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Train times on 12306 for the new line; timetables are still settling after the September 2026 opening.
  • Wanglongshan opening dates and tickets for the season.
  • Taxi or bus from Qing'an South to the forest park.
