Wenshan Travel Guide: Puzhehei's Lakes, Lotus Ponds and Karst Hills

Most visitors to Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, in southeast Yunnan, are heading for one place: Puzhehei in Qiubei County. It is a chain of linked lakes and channels wound between hundreds of green karst cones, with Yi villages on the shore and huge lotus ponds that peak in July. "Puzhehei" is Yi for "a place rich in fish and shrimp". High-speed trains from Kunming South reach Puzhehei station in about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and a tram runs on to the scenic area. Sleep by the lakes for at least one night; Wenshan city, the prefecture seat, is a long way south and not where you want to be.

Getting in and where to stay

Puzhehei station, opened in December 2016 on the Nanning–Kunming high-speed line, is in Jinping town, Qiubei's county seat. Outside, Wenshan tram line 4 links the county town and the Puzhehei visitor centre (it ran until about 18:00 in 2026 reports), and buses run too. Flights into Wenshan Puzhehei Airport still leave a long road transfer to the lakes.

Stay in the villages and guesthouses around the lakes, such as Puzhehei village and Xianren Cave village, or in Qiubei town for cheaper hotels. Check that your hotel pin is at Puzhehei and not in Wenshan city.

Places worth visiting

The Puzhehei lakes

The lake system is a highland karst basin of several connected lakes, the largest being Luoshuidong Lake, Puzhehei Lake and Xianren Lake. Puzhehei Lake itself is river-like: about 21 km long along the Beimen River channel, 0.1–0.5 km wide and usually 3–4 m deep, with a water surface of 6.29 km². It is a national 5A scenic area, a national scenic area and a national wetland park. The scenic operator runs three boat routes. In 2026 they were listed at ¥279 for the eastern route in small willow-leaf boats, and ¥259 each for the central route in painted boats and the western route on bamboo rafts, with the day's shuttle bus included. Walking or cycling the lakeside roads costs nothing.

Lotus season

The lotus season runs from June to August, with the most flowers in July, when the ponds stretch for kilometres between the hills. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, and the summer rains can stop boats. Come early in the morning, before the tour groups and the midday heat.

Qinglong Mountain is the classic lookout over the lotus ponds and the scattered hills. The climb and return take about an hour. In 2026 you had to reserve a free slot on the scenic area's mini-program first. Sunrise and early-morning mist are the best times; by midday the haze flattens the view.

Beyond Puzhehei

Wenshan prefecture has the most extensive karst landscapes in Yunnan. With a car, the best-known excursion is Bamei in Guangnan County, a karst village reached by boat through a river cave. Wenshan is also China's main source of sanqi (notoginseng), the medicinal root, which you will see sold everywhere in Wenshan city.

When to come

June to August for the lotus, with the most flowers in July; this is also the rainy season. September to November is quieter, greener and good for walking. Winters are mild but the ponds are bare. Book rooms early for summer weekends and holidays.

Eating in Wenshan

Food is southeast Yunnan home cooking with a sour-spicy edge. Lake fish and shrimp are the obvious local choice at Puzhehei, along with lotus root and lotus seeds in season. Zhuang, Miao and Yi dishes appear at village restaurants. Agree the price of fish by weight before it is cooked.

How to arrange the route

  1. Day 1: morning train from Kunming South, tram to the scenic area, afternoon walk or bike ride around the lakes, night by the water.
  2. Day 2: Qinglong Mountain at dawn, a boat route if the weather is good, lotus ponds in the afternoon.
  3. Day 3: a slow village morning, then the train back to Kunming, or a car to Bamei.

What to cut if short on time

Keep one night at Puzhehei and the Qinglong sunrise. Boats are optional, since the lakeside roads show much of the same scenery. Skip Wenshan city entirely unless you have business there.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Hotel location: Puzhehei or Qiubei, not Wenshan city.
  • Qinglong Mountain reservation on the scenic area's mini-program.
  • Boat routes, prices and rain cancellations.
  • The last tram and train times.
