Haixi Travel Guide: Golmud, Chaka Salt Lake, and Yardang

Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture covers the Qaidam Basin at scale. Golmud is the industrial and transport hinge, while Chaka Salt Lake, Da Qaidam emerald-water viewpoints, and yardang fields sit on long road hours. Give priority to one salt-lake hero and honest transfer time. Do not treat Haixi as a Xining city stroll, and do not assume Qinghai Lake (different prefecture geography for many classic shore stops) is the same product as Chaka.

Stay in Golmud for rail and onward Qinghai–Tibet logistics, or closer to Chaka when the salt lake owns dawn photos. Pair with Haidong only as a separate Xining-east chapter, or Yushu when the plateau journey continues. Hired car or organized tours are the practical way across basin distances. Confirm fuel, water, and last daylight returns before yardang drives.

When to come to Haixi

Qaidam Basin arid highland climate: strong sun, cold nights, wind, and thin services outside Golmud. May–October covers most salt-lake and yardang visits; winter is harsh and some services thin further. Summer midday glare on salt crusts is intense; morning and late light photograph better and feel kinder on eyes. Altitude and dryness dehydrate faster than the cool air suggests.

Getting in and where to stay

Golmud sits on the Qinghai–Tibet rail and highway spine. Chaka and Da Qaidam are not casual urban taxis; they are road days. Read ticket and tour inclusions carefully so "salt lake" means the lake you wanted. If Xining already filled your schedule, do not invent a same-day Chaka return without checking real hours. Carry cash backups where mobile payments and fuel stations thin out.

Places worth visiting

Chaka Salt Lake

Chaka is the salt-lake hero for many first-time Haixi visitors: boardwalks, mirror-sky photos when wind and light cooperate, and heavy tourist infrastructure in season. Tickets, trainlets, and open zones follow the official notice for the day; check current prices there. Wind can erase the mirror effect; cloudy days change the postcard. Protect skin and eyes on bright salt.

Golmud is logistics, sleep, and industrial-city texture more than a postcard stroll. Da Qaidam emerald-water viewpoints and yardang fields are separate long road chapters. Strong if basin landscapes are the thesis; cut when Chaka already filled a short trip and daylight is gone. Dust, wind, and distance are the real constraints.

What not to confuse

Skip confusing Chaka with Qinghai Lake shores. Different water, different prefecture framing for many classic stops, different day plans. Travellers who treat Haixi as a quick Xining suburb usually underestimate the basin. Keep Xining for city and Kumbum days; keep Haixi for salt and desert-scale driving.

Eating in Haixi

Golmud restaurants cover Hui, Han, and plateau practical meals: noodles, lamb, and simple hotel dining after long drives. Confirm set prices; amounts change. Carry snacks and water on salt-lake and yardang days; services thin between towns. Mild first meals help if altitude is new.

How to arrange the route

  • Day one: arrive Golmud; rest and supplies; overnight.
  • Day two: Chaka Salt Lake full day; overnight Golmud or Chaka area.
  • Day three–four: Da Qaidam or yardang only if required; else rail toward Xining / Yushu.

Two days cover Golmud plus Chaka; three to four if yardang and Da Qaidam also matter.

What to cut if short on time

Cut yardang after a full Chaka day first. Cut Da Qaidam if salt lake already filled the thesis. Keep one Chaka day as the honest core stop for most first visits.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Chaka tickets, open zones, and weather/wind.
  • Road hours and fuel for any yardang plan.
  • Altitude, sun, and cold-night layers.
  • Follow official notices for the day on prices and hours.
