Huanggang Travel Guide: Su Dongpo's Red Cliff and the Dabie Foothills
Huanggang, just downriver from Wuhan, is where the Song poet Su Shi spent four years in exile and wrote some of the most famous lines in Chinese literature. The place he wrote about, Dongpo Chibi (Dongpo's Red Cliff), sits in Huangzhou, the urban core, and makes an easy half-day. The rest of the prefecture stretches north into the Dabie Mountains and east along the Yangtze, with a Chan Buddhist temple, the hometown of the herbalist Li Shizhen and mountain parks. Each of those needs its own day and a car.
Dongpo Chibi: the literary Red Cliff
In 1080, after the "Crow Terrace Poetry Case" nearly cost him his life, Su Shi was banished to Huangzhou as a minor official with no real duties. He farmed a plot of land on an eastern slope, took the name Dongpo ("eastern slope") from it, and on trips to the red rock by the river wrote the two Odes on the Red Cliff and the lyric that begins "The great river flows east". He believed, probably wrongly, that this was where the Battle of Red Cliffs had been fought in 208.
That's why there are two Red Cliffs in Hubei. The battlefield site is at Chibi city in Xianning, upriver from Wuhan; Huanggang's is the literary one. Make sure you're heading to the right place.
Visiting: the park climbs a small red sandstone hill with halls, pavilions and stone tablets carved with Su Shi's calligraphy and the odes. The river has moved away since the Song, so you won't see water lapping the cliff. Allow two to three hours. Mornings are quieter and cooler. If you read even a translation of the first ode before you go, the visit becomes far more rewarding. Check the official notice for current tickets and hours.
The Qixia Pavilion at the top of the park is the best spot to look out over the city and toward the river.
Further afield
These are spread across the prefecture, so treat each as a day trip from Huangzhou or as a stop on a longer road trip:
- Wuzu Temple, Huangmei County: the monastery of Hongren, the Fifth Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, on a mountain north of Huangmei town. Huangmei also gave its name to Huangmei opera.
- Qichun: hometown of Li Shizhen, the Ming author of the Compendium of Materia Medica, with a memorial hall and tomb. The county is known for its "four treasures": snake, turtle, bamboo and moxa.
- Yingshan: birthplace of Bi Sheng, the Song-era inventor of movable type.
- Dabie Mountains: forested ranges along the Henan and Anhui borders, with hiking parks around Luotian and Yingshan counties and Red Army history in Hong'an. Mountain roads are slow; plan a full day and check weather.
When to come to Huanggang
Huanggang has hot, humid summers, chilly damp winters and comfortable springs and autumns. April to May and September to November are best for Dongpo Chibi and the mountains. Autumn foliage in the Dabie range is a draw in late October and November. Summer mornings are fine for the Red Cliff park; afternoons are sticky.
Getting in and where to stay
Intercity trains from Wuhan reach Huanggang in well under an hour, making a day trip from Wuhan easy. The Beijing–Kowloon railway also crosses the prefecture, with Huangzhou station northeast of downtown, and Huangshi station across the river is another option. Wuhan Tianhe airport is about 90 km west. The Ehuang Bridge connects the city with Ezhou across the Yangtze.
Stay in Huangzhou District for Dongpo Chibi and the best restaurant choice. For Dabie trips, stay in the relevant county town rather than commuting.
Eating in Huanggang
East Hubei cooking is hearty and moderately spicy. Look for "Dongpo pork", the slow-braised pork belly linked to Su Shi (who wrote about cooking pork during his exile), along with freshwater fish, lotus root soups and Luotian chestnuts in autumn. Riverside streets in Huangzhou have the most choice; prices for fish sold by weight should be checked first.
How to arrange the route
Day 1: Intercity train from Wuhan, Dongpo Chibi in the morning, lunch in Huangzhou, back to Wuhan or overnight.
Day 2: Wuzu Temple and Huangmei, or Qichun for Li Shizhen, or a mountain park in the Dabie range.
Day 3 (optional): Second Dabie day, or continue east to Huangshi and Jiujiang.
What to cut if short on time
Keep Dongpo Chibi and drop the rest. It's the only sight that works as a short trip from Wuhan.
Things to confirm before you go

Frequently asked questions
Is Dongpo Chibi the site of the Battle of Red Cliffs?
No. Su Shi believed it was, but the battlefield is generally placed at Chibi city in Xianning. Huanggang's is the "literary Red Cliff".
How long do I need at Dongpo Chibi?
Two to three hours. It's an easy half-day from Wuhan.
Is Huanggang worth visiting for the mountains?
Yes, if you have a car and time. The Dabie Mountains are less visited than better-known ranges, but distances are long.
