Ili Travel Guide: Sayram Lake, Nalati Grassland and the Yining Valley

The Ili valley in northern Xinjiang is the greenest corner of the region: snow-capped Tianshan ridges, high meadows grazed by Kazakh herders, and the Ili River flowing west into Kazakhstan. The two landscapes everyone comes for are Sayram Lake, an alpine lake on the road in from Urumqi, and Nalati Grassland in Xinyuan County. They're hours apart, so think in terms of a road trip of four to six days, using Yining (also called Gulja), the prefecture's capital, as the hub. June to September is the season.

First, understand the distances

Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture is vast, larger than many countries. "Ili" on a hotel or tour can mean anywhere in it. Rough planning rules:

  • Sayram Lake is about two hours by road from Yining, over the mountains via Guozigou. Strictly speaking it sits just inside neighbouring Bortala, but every Ili itinerary includes it.
  • Nalati is several hours east of Yining, in the opposite direction from Sayram.
  • Tekes and Kalajun are another county again, south of Nalati.

Trying to do two of these in one day leads to a day spent mostly in a car.

Sayram Lake

This large, cold lake at the foot of the Tianshan is famous for its colour, deep blue on a clear day, grey in cloud, and that can change within an hour. A road circles the lake with viewpoints, meadows and Kazakh yurt camps along the shore. Most visitors enter through the scenic area gate and use the lakeside shuttle or their own car between stops; walking the whole shoreline isn't realistic in a day.

Plan a full day, with warm layers even in July: it's high and windy. The Sayram Lake page covers the shore loop, shuttles and day-trip timing from Yining. Ticket and shuttle prices change, so check the official notice; none are quoted here.

On the way down toward Yining, the road crosses the Guozigou Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge high above a gorge. It's a photo stop on the drive, not a destination.

Nalati Grassland

Nalati (Narat) sits in Xinyuan County, and it rewards an overnight stay. The scenic area is divided into zones: the high "sky grassland" on the ridges, reached by scenic-area buses, and lower river-valley meadows with forest edges and horse riding. Each zone may need its own shuttle ticket, so read what yours covers.

The light is best early and late, which day-trippers miss. Sleep in Nalati town or Xinyuan and give the grassland at least one full day. The Nalati page has details on zones, booking and overnight options.

Yining and nearby

Yining is a city of tree-lined streets with a large Uyghur and Kazakh population. It's the place for food and a slower pace:

  • Kazanqi is an old neighbourhood of blue-painted houses with carved gates, home to a Uyghur community, pleasant for a wander and a meal.
  • Liuxingjie (Six-Star Street) is an old district laid out in a hexagram pattern in the 1930s, known for food.
  • Huiyuan in Huocheng County was the residence of the Qing General of Ili, the commander of all Xinjiang, and its old town has a drum tower and the general's residence. Huocheng is also known for lavender fields, which bloom in early summer.

Further afield, Tekes is famous as the "Bagua city", its streets laid out in the radiating pattern of the eight trigrams, and the Kalajun grasslands lie south of it. Add them only with spare days.

When to come to Ili

June to September is the practical window. June brings wildflowers and lavender; July and August are peak season with full grassland camps, crowds and higher prices; September is golden and quieter. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. In winter, high roads and grassland areas close or become difficult, though Yining remains open.

Getting there and around

Yining Airport has flights to Urumqi and other Chinese cities, and Xinyuan Nalati Airport serves the grassland end of the valley. Trains link Urumqi with Yining, passing close to Sayram Lake. Between towns, shared cars, inter-county buses and hired cars with drivers are the main options. Self-drive is popular, but check fuel and road status.

Carry your passport at all times: Xinjiang has frequent identity and security checks on roads and at scenic areas. Foreign visitors should book hotels that can register foreign guests.

Eating in Ili

Food is a mix of Uyghur, Kazakh and Hui cooking: laghman noodles, polo (rice with lamb and carrot), kebabs, naan and big platters of lamb. Ili is known for its dairy, so try yogurt, horse milk (kumis) in the grassland season, and local honey. Yining's restaurants are the most reliable; in camps, agree the price of a whole lamb or meat platter before ordering.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: Arrive in Yining; Kazanqi and dinner in Liuxingjie.

Day 2: Sayram Lake day trip, crossing Guozigou Bridge; back to Yining or stay by the lake.

Day 3: Drive or bus east to Nalati; evening walk in the meadows.

Day 4: Full day in Nalati: sky grassland in the morning, valley in the afternoon.

Day 5: Return to Yining or fly out from Xinyuan, toward Urumqi. Add Tekes and Kalajun with a sixth day.

What to cut if short on time

With three days, choose Sayram or Nalati rather than rushing both. Drop Tekes, Kalajun and out-of-season lavender first.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Opening seasons, tickets and shuttles at Sayram Lake and Nalati; none are quoted here.
  • Road conditions between Yining, Sayram and Nalati, especially early and late in the season.
  • Hotel registration for foreign guests.
  • Weather: storms close high roads and spoil lake views.
