Urumqi Travel Guide: The Xinjiang Museum, Red Hill, the Grand Bazaar and Heavenly Lake
Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, is where most trips into the region start, and it repays two or three days. Spend a morning at the Xinjiang Museum, free with a booking, for the Silk Road finds and the Tarim mummies. Climb Red Hill for the view, and go to the Grand Bazaar after dark for food. Then give a full day to Tianchi, the Heavenly Lake under Bogda Peak (¥95 plus a ¥60 compulsory shuttle in summer 2026). Metro Line 1 links the airport, the main railway station and the bazaar, and the oasis of Turpan is about an hour away by high-speed train.
Getting in and where to stay
Urumqi Diwopu International Airport is the hub for Xinjiang. Urumqi station handles high-speed trains on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line east to Turpan and Hami and west to Shihezi, as well as long-distance trains to the south. Metro Line 1 runs from the airport through the station area to the centre, with a stop at Erdaoqiao for the Grand Bazaar.
Stay in the centre, around Nanmen, Renmin Square or Youhao Road, for metro access and food. Hotels near the bazaar are lively at night but noisy. Expect bag and ID checks at metro stations, malls and sights, as everywhere in Xinjiang.
Places worth visiting
Tianshan Tianchi (Heavenly Lake)
A narrow glacial lake at about 1,900 m on the northern slope of the Bogda range, in Fukang, roughly 45 km east of the city in a straight line and further by road. It is about 3 km long and up to 105 m deep, with spruce forest down to the water and the 5,400 m snow summit of Bogda behind it on clear days. Vikram Seth started the hitchhiking journey of From Heaven Lake here in 1981.
The 2026 ticket is ¥95 from 1 April to 31 October and ¥45 in winter. Visitors 65 and over enter free. The ¥60 round-trip shuttle from the visitor centre is compulsory. Book real-name tickets online at least a day ahead. Peak-season hours are about 08:00–19:00, and boats and the Mayashan cable car cost extra. Tour buses leave Urumqi in the morning, or hire a car. The lake is much colder than the city, so bring a jacket even in July.
Xinjiang Museum
The regional museum on Xibei Road in Saybagh District is the best introduction to everything you will see later in Xinjiang. It holds more than 40,000 objects, 381 of them national first-grade relics, and its galleries cover Silk Road history, regional costumes, excavated documents and the desert-preserved mummies, including the "Loulan Beauty". Entry is free with a real-name booking 1–7 days ahead on the museum's WeChat account. In summer 2026 it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:30 (last entry 18:00); in winter, 10:30–18:00. It is closed on Mondays except public holidays. Buses 7, 51 and 68 stop at Bowuguan. Allow three hours.
Red Hill (Hongshan)
A red sandstone hill in the middle of the city, now a park, topped by a small Qing-era brick pagoda. It is a short climb for a view over the high-rises to the snow peaks of the Tian Shan when the air is clear. Go in the late afternoon, then head to the bazaar for dinner.
The Grand Bazaar
The Erdaoqiao district has been Urumqi's Uyghur and Hui trading quarter since the Qing. Its centrepiece, opened in 2003, is a complex of brick halls with more than 3,300 shops selling dried fruit, spices, carpets, knives, instruments and jade. The 70 m tower takes its top from the Kalyan minaret in Bukhara and its shaft from Turpan's Emin Minaret; its lift to the viewing deck charges separately. Around it, a 775 m pedestrian street added after 2018 has more than 70 food stalls serving lamb skewers, roast goose eggs and yogurt over rice dumplings. Entry is free. Come around sunset; most shops close around 22:00, and food stalls stay open later in summer. The nearest metro stop is Erdaoqiao on Line 1.
When to come
May to September for Tianchi and comfortable walking. July and August are the warmest and busiest. Autumn brings clearer mountain views. Winters are very cold, but the museum and bazaar still work, and Tianchi tickets are cheaper from November. Days and evenings run late: Xinjiang uses Beijing time, so sunset in summer is after 21:30.
Eating in Urumqi
Polo (rice pilaf with lamb and carrots), laghman noodles, lamb skewers, nang flatbread and big-plate chicken are the staples. Yogurt and dried fruit are everywhere. The bazaar's food street is the easiest place to start; Hui restaurants serve beef noodles and lamb dishes.
How to arrange the route
- Day 1: Xinjiang Museum (booked, not Monday), Red Hill in the late afternoon, the Grand Bazaar for dinner.
- Day 2: Tianchi for the full day, back for a quiet dinner.
- Day 3: train to Turpan, or west to Shihezi and on to Sayram Lake.
Kashgar, Hotan, Altay for Kanas, and Karamay for the yardang "ghost city" are all separate, long trips from here.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, do the museum and the bazaar. Tianchi needs a whole day; drop it if you are only changing trains. Skip the bazaar shopping if Kashgar is ahead, but keep the food.
Things to confirm before you go
- Museum booking slot and Monday closure.
- Tianchi tickets, shuttle and weather; prices change on 1 November.
- Tower and show tickets at the bazaar.
- Passport or ID with you at all times for checks.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in Urumqi?
Two days for the city and Tianchi; three if you want a slower pace or a day to rest before a long journey.
Is Tianchi worth it?
Yes, if you have a clear day. The lake and the snow peaks behind it are a strong contrast to the deserts elsewhere in Xinjiang.
Is the Xinjiang Museum free?
Yes. Book a timed slot on its WeChat account 1–7 days ahead and bring the ID you booked with.
