Mount Putuo, Guanyin's Island Bodhimanda in the Zhoushan Archipelago
Mount Putuo, Putuoshan in Chinese, is an island in Putuo District, Zhoushan, Zhejiang. It is one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains and the bodhimanda of Guanyin. English Wikipedia gives the island about 12.5 square kilometres. After the Tang dynasty it became a centre of Guanyin worship; today pilgrims and tourists share temple courtyards, shore paths and island buses. Atmosphere lives on the island. Zhoushan's urban districts are mainly the transport hinge. Give Putuo its own night if dawn halls and evening tide paths matter.
History in brief
Chinese sources say the island was once called Meicen Mountain. The name Putuo comes from Potalaka, the Sanskrit name for Guanyin's mythic island. A well-known story places the Japanese monk Egaku (Hui'e) here in the ninth century with a Guanyin image that "would not leave," leading to the Bukenqu Guanyin Temple. From the Song onward, writers linked the island's white flowers and sea light to the Avatamsaka Sutra's description of Potalaka. The three main monasteries that structure most visits are Puji Temple (from the tenth century), Fayu Temple (traditionally dated to 1580) and Huiji Temple (1793). More than thirty temples stand on the island under the Buddhist Association of China.
Festival dates on the nineteenth day of the second, sixth and ninth lunar months fill lodging. Book early if those dates matter to you.
The temple loop
Plan a logical island loop rather than zigzagging the bus map. Puji Temple is the large lowland monastery most day visitors reach first. Fayu Temple climbs the hillside with imperial-style halls and is known for its nine-dragon coffered ceiling. Huiji Temple sits higher on Foding Mountain; a cable car serves that climb when running. Modest clothing respects active worship. Shoes should handle stone stairs and sand.
Private cars are not allowed on the island. Public buses and the cable car move people between clusters. English Wikipedia notes the single-road constraint and environmental rules behind the car ban. Expect queues on holidays.
Tickets, ferries and hours
Island entrance and ferry are separate charges. Travel listings for 2026 commonly give peak-season entrance around 160 yuan from February to November and a lower winter rate in December and January, with higher holiday blocks around lunar new year, May Day and National Day. Ordinary ferries and faster business boats price differently; combined entrance-plus-ferry passes appear on some booking channels as the plain sum of the two. Several temples also charge a small door ticket, often only a few yuan. Island buses and the cable car cost extra. Treat every yuan figure as a listing snapshot and check the day's official notice before you pay.
Temple hours are commonly listed around 6:00 to 17:30 or 18:00, sometimes extended in summer. The scenic area itself stays open longer for shore walks. Typhoon and fog seasons cancel boats; build slack into any tight mainland connection. Winter ferry schedules on Zhoushan routes change in autumn; read the current sailing table for Wugongzhi, Shenjiamen and related piers.
Temples first, shores second
The Zhoushan guide puts core temples as day one's focus and beaches or coastal paths as recovery walking in the evening or on day two. Pair the main loop with the Nanhai Guanyin statue at the southern tip when energy remains. Skip forcing Hangzhou's West Lake into the same weekend if both need unhurried time and your ferries already fill the buffer.
Vegetarian temple-adjacent meals are common on the island. Off-island Zhoushan is famous for seafood when you sleep in the city.
Before you go

- Read whether your ticket is mainland gate, Zhoushan city or Putuo scenic entry.
- Wear modest clothes and shoes for stairs and sand.
- Keep a buffer for typhoon and fog cancellations.
- Carry small cash or mobile pay for temple door tickets and buses.
