Jining Travel Guide: Qufu, Zoucheng and the Grand Canal City
Most people who come to Jining prefecture are going to Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, 45 km northeast of the city. Its three great sites, the Temple of Confucius, the Kong Family Mansion and the Cemetery of Confucius, form one UNESCO World Heritage Site and need a full day, better two. Jining is also home to Zoucheng, where Mencius was born, and to the old Grand Canal city of Jining itself, with a Tang poet's tower and a Song iron pagoda. Stay in Qufu, arrive at Qufu East on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line, and give Jining city an afternoon if trains route you through it.
Qufu: the three Kong sites
Locals call them San Kong, "the three Kongs", and they have been a single World Heritage Site since 1994.
Temple of Confucius
Within two years of Confucius's death his house was consecrated as a temple, and from 205 BC, when the Han founder Liu Bang came to sacrifice here, emperors kept returning. The present complex was largely rebuilt after a fire in 1499, so it resembles the Forbidden City in style; it is the second-largest historic building complex in China. Walk the central axis north through gates and stele pavilions to Dacheng Hall, the main sacrificial hall. Axis order and etiquette are on the Confucius Temple page.
Kong Family Mansion
Next door, the Kong Family Mansion was the home and office of Confucius's senior descendants, the Dukes of Yansheng. The front halls are official; behind them are the family's living quarters and garden. Do it the same day as the temple, after lunch.
Cemetery of Confucius
The Cemetery of Confucius lies 1.3 km north of the walled town. Its wall, begun in 1331, eventually stretched 7.5 km around 3.6 square kilometres of forest, where more than 100,000 descendants have been buried over about 2,000 years. Confucius's own tomb is a simple cone-shaped mound. Some 3,600 tombstones from the Song to the Qing stand among old trees. Take an electric cart or hire a bicycle inside; walking the whole place takes hours. It is much calmer than the temple, which makes it a good second-day morning.
Tickets for the three sites are sold separately or as a combined pass, and rules on booking change; check the official notice. Weekends and holidays bring big tour groups to the temple. Get to the gate at opening.
Beyond Qufu
Zoucheng: Mencius
Zoucheng, south of Qufu, is where Mencius, Confucianism's second sage, was born. The Mencius Temple dates back to 1037 and has five courtyards, 64 halls and rooms and more than 270 steles, some from the Song and a few Yuan inscriptions in 'Phags-pa script. The Mencius Mansion stands next to it. It sees a fraction of Qufu's crowds, and half a day here is a good add-on.
Jining city and the Grand Canal
Jining grew on the Grand Canal, and barges still use it south towards Nanyang Lake. Two free stops make a good afternoon in the city:
- Taibai Tower, on a surviving piece of Ming city wall above the old canal, remembers Li Bai, who made his family home here for years, with a memorial hall inside.
- The Iron Pagoda of Chongjue Temple, cast in 1105, stands in a museum courtyard beside a bell tower with a Song iron bell.
The prefecture also includes Liangshan County, the setting of the outlaws' marsh in Water Margin, and Weishan Lake, part of a large lake chain to the south. Both are long side trips without a car.
When to come to Jining
April to May and September to October. Summers are hot and wet, and the temple courtyards have little shade at midday. Winters are cold, dry and sunny, which makes for quiet, stark visits. Avoid Chinese public holidays, and note that Qufu holds large ceremonies around Confucius's birthday in late September, which bring crowds along with the spectacle.
Getting in and where to stay
- Qufu East is on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway (opened 2011), a few kilometres southeast of town. It is the easiest arrival from Beijing, Jinan, Nanjing or Shanghai.
- Qufu South opened in 2021 on the Rizhao–Lankao high-speed line, which also serves Jining and runs west to Heze.
- Yanzhou station, 15 km west, is on the old conventional line.
- Jining Da'an Airport has domestic flights.
Sleep inside or near Qufu's walled town so you can walk to the temple at opening and back for dinner. Stay in Jining city only if you're on an early train from there.
Eating in Jining
Shandong (Lu) cooking is salty, savoury and wheat-based. In Qufu, the Kong family banquet (Kongfu cai) is a set menu of elaborate dishes once served at the mansion; restaurants near the temple sell versions of it, which are fun as a one-off and expensive for what you get. Day to day, look for pancakes (jianbing) rolled with scallion, lamb soup and plain wheat buns. Just outside Qufu's west gate, a Muslim neighbourhood with a mosque and market is a good place for halal food.
How to arrange the route
Day 1: Temple of Confucius at opening, lunch, Kong Family Mansion in the afternoon, the walled town in the evening.
Day 2: Cemetery of Confucius in the morning, Zoucheng and the Mencius Temple in the afternoon.
Day 3 (optional): Jining city for Taibai Tower and the Iron Pagoda, then on to Tai'an for Mount Tai, Jinan or Qingdao.
What to cut if short on time
With one day, do the temple and mansion and skip the rest. With a day and a half, add the cemetery. Jining city and Zoucheng are the first things to drop. Keep Mount Tai for its own day; it doesn't fit as an afternoon add-on.
Things to confirm before you go
- Ticket options for the three Kong sites and any booking requirement.
- Cart or bicycle hire inside the cemetery.
- Whether your train stops at Qufu East, Qufu South or Jining.
- Festival dates in late September, which can affect temple access and crowds.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need in Qufu?
One full day for the temple and mansion, and a second morning for the cemetery. Add Zoucheng to fill the second day.
Can I visit Qufu as a day trip from Jinan or Tai'an?
Yes. Qufu East is a short high-speed ride from both, so a long day covering the temple and mansion works. You'll miss the calm of the cemetery and the evening town.
Is Jining city worth visiting?
For an afternoon, yes. Taibai Tower and the Iron Pagoda are free and close together. It isn't worth a separate night.
