Heze Travel Guide: Peony Season, Caozhou Peony Garden and Southwest Shandong Food

Heze is worth a special trip for one reason: tree peonies. The city in far southwest Shandong, historically called Caozhou, is China's biggest peony-growing centre, and for roughly three weeks in April its gardens are full of more than a thousand cultivars. Come in that window, book Caozhou Peony Garden ahead, and one or two nights is enough. Outside spring, Heze is a pleasant food stop between Jining and Henan, with little to hold you.

When to come to Heze

April, and plan around the flower forecast. The garden publishes bloom phases each spring with the city weather bureau. In 2026 the early phase ran from 1 to 3 April, the peak from about 4 to 22 April, and the late phase to around 5 May, when herbaceous peonies took over into mid May. Each year moves by a few days, so check the official forecast in March before buying train tickets.

The rest of the year is a different trip. Spring is dry and nearly rainless, summer is hot and humid (about 70% of the year's rain falls from June to September), and January averages just below freezing. Listings show Caozhou Peony Garden closed from late May to mid February apart from short previews, so an autumn visit may find the main gate shut.

The peony gardens

Caozhou Peony Garden

The largest garden and the one with the most varieties, on Renmin Road in Mudan District on the north side of the city. A 2026 provincial notice counted more than 1,300 tree peony cultivars in nine colour groups and about 800,000 plants, plus over 600 herbaceous peony cultivars. In the 2026 season every visitor had to book through the garden's official WeChat account, free-entry groups included, and local press reported tiered tickets of 30 yuan in the early and late phases and 60 yuan at peak, subject to change. Hours, night openings and the visit order are on the Caozhou Peony Garden page.

Get there at opening. Tour buses arrive mid-morning and the central avenue fills first, so walk it early, then use the flat midday light for the indoor Guohua Hall and come back to the beds in late afternoon.

Gujin Garden and the smaller gardens

Several older gardens, Gujin Garden and Baihua Garden among them, sit around the city. They are smaller and calmer, and the near-black flower above was photographed at Gujin. Use one as a second morning if Caozhou was packed. Visiting three gardens in one afternoon mostly gets you sunburnt; one garden done slowly shows you more.

The prefecture has history, but it is spread across counties rather than packed into town. Shan County has the stone archways and the Hundred Lion Square, a 14-metre memorial arch carved with a hundred lions. Yuncheng County leans on its Water Margin connection, since the novel's hero Song Jiang is placed there, and markets that as Shuihu Hero City with martial-arts shows. Fulong Lake, southwest of Shan County, is the second-largest plain reservoir in Shandong. Each of these is a separate drive from Mudan District, so pick one at most.

Is Heze worth it without peonies?

For most travellers, no. It works as an overnight break on the way from Jining or Qufu towards Kaifeng, with a good dinner and a walk past the signal tower in Mudan.

Getting in and where to stay

  • High-speed rail: Heze East is on the Rizhao–Lankao (Lunan) high-speed line, which runs east to Jining and Qufu and west into Henan. This is the station most visitors use.
  • Conventional trains: Heze station sits on the old Beijing–Kowloon railway.
  • Air: Heze Mudan Airport opened on 2 April 2021, with domestic flights only.

In peak week, sleep near Caozhou Peony Garden in the north of Mudan District so you can walk or take a short taxi to the gate at opening. Hotels near the garden fill around the festival, so book when you book trains. Off-season, stay near the station you will leave from.

Eating in Heze

Southwest Shandong food is wheat, soup and slow-cooked meat, and Heze does it well.

  • Shanxian lamb soup (Shanxian yangrou tang): the local signature, first made in 1807 by the usual account. A bowl with flatbread is breakfast here.
  • Caozhou sesame cake (shaobing): round, crisp outside and soft inside, sold from street ovens.
  • Pijia roast chicken: red-glazed and tender, a takeaway dish.
  • Jar soup from Juye: a slow-simmered soup from Daxieji town, one of the region's best-known dishes.
  • Peony cake: a flower-paste pastry sold everywhere in bloom season, mostly as a gift box.

Food stalls inside the gardens charge festival prices. Walk a few streets out for soup shops with prices on the wall.

How to arrange the route

Peony trip, two days: Arrive at Heze East in the afternoon and settle near the garden. Day one, Caozhou Peony Garden from opening to lunch, a rest, then back for late light or the night opening. Day two, a smaller garden early, lamb soup, then a train to Jining for Taibai Tower and the canal, or on to Qufu.

Passing through: One night, a soup dinner, and leave in the morning. Skip the county sights unless you have a driver.

What to cut if short on time

In bloom season, keep Caozhou Peony Garden at opening time and cut everything else first: the smaller gardens such as Gujin, then the county trips to Shan County and Yuncheng. Out of season, don't make a special trip; treat Heze as a soup-and-sleep stop between Qufu and Kaifeng.

Things to confirm before you go

  • The year's bloom forecast, which shifts every spring.
  • The WeChat booking rule and the current ticket price for your phase.
  • Whether the garden is open at all if you come outside April and May.
  • Which station your train uses, Heze East or Heze.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to see peonies in Heze?

Mid April in most years. In 2026 the garden named 4 to 22 April as the main viewing period.

How many days do I need in Heze?

One full day in bloom season covers Caozhou Peony Garden properly. Add a second morning for a smaller garden or a county trip.

Can I visit Heze from Jining or Qufu as a day trip?

Yes. The Lunan high-speed line links them, so a day trip in April is realistic if you catch an early train and book the garden in advance.
