Longnan Travel Guide: Green Southern Gansu and Wudu Valleys

Longnan is southern Gansu's green surprise. Wudu sits in humid mountain valleys, nothing like the Hexi desert cities of Zhangye or Jiayuguan. Come for valley walks and at most one forest-park day such as Guan'egou. Give transfers real time after Tianshui; do not invent a Danxia day from Longnan streets.

Places worth visiting

Markets, hillside streets and green valley views explain Longnan's different climate face of Gansu. Walk one hillside or riverside segment near your hotel rather than racing every forest-park ticket. Useful overnight base; any paid parks follow the day's official notice.

Elevated views over Wudu

A short climb or viewpoint stop for context on the valley layout. Fine on arrival evening; cut when Guan'egou already owns the only full day.

Streets, Guan'egou and farther valleys

Guan'egou and similar forest-valley parks need dedicated transfer time. Wanxiang Cave and Wenxian outings are optional depth for cave or remote-valley framing. Local market food evenings in Wudu work after valley returns. Corridor links continue toward Tianshui, Dingxi or Lanzhou.

When to come to Longnan

Southern Gansu mountains are greener and wetter than Hexi, with humid summers and cooler valley winters. Spring and autumn often favor valley walks; summer storms can affect mountain roads.

Getting in and where to stay

Rail and highway approaches into Wudu take longer than Hexi straight shots; read station names carefully. Valley parks need hired cars or infrequent buses. Confirm last returns before dusk mountain drives. Stay in Wudu for food and sleep unless you booked valley-adjacent lodging.

Eating in Longnan

Southern Gansu mountain cooking, fresh greens uncommon on Hexi menus, and simple Wudu noodle houses. Ask for set prices; this guide does not quote yuan amounts.

How to arrange the route

Day 1: Arrive Wudu; soft valley evening; overnight.

Day 2: Guan'egou or chosen forest-valley day if transfers allow.

Day 3: Leftover town walks, then rail or road toward Tianshui, Dingxi or Lanzhou.

What to cut if short on time

Keep one Wudu valley overnight plus at most one outdoor park. Cut remote Wenxian loops first, then a second forest park after Guan'egou. Civic plazas are evening-only filler.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Mountain road weather and landslide notices in season.
  • Transfer time to Guan'egou or other parks.
  • Which Longnan / Wudu station or bus gate your ticket uses.
  • Current ticket and hours on the official notice.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Longnan?

Two cover Wudu plus one valley park; three only if remote counties are also required.

Wudu town or Guan'egou if only one?

Wudu for climate-hinge texture on a short stop; Guan'egou when forest-valley hiking is the thesis.

Is Longnan like Zhangye or Jiayuguan?

No. Expect greener southern mountain valleys, not Hexi desert forts and rainbow hills.
