Luhuitou Park, Sanya: Sunset Over Deer City

Luhuitou (鹿回头, "the deer turns its head") is the headland park on the ridge between Dadonghai and Sanya Bay, and the best place in the city to watch the sun go down over the whole coastline. The hilltop has the deer sculpture that gave Sanya its nickname, Deer City, and views over the city, the bays and the islands offshore. Recent listings give an adult ticket of about 45 yuan, with an electric cart up the hill for extra and the park open into the evening. Walking up takes about half an hour. Come about an hour before sunset after a swim at Dadonghai, and allow one to two hours. The rest of the five days is in the Sanya travel guide.

The legend on the hilltop

The story belongs to the Li people, Hainan's oldest inhabitants. A young Li hunter chased a deer across the mountains to the edge of the sea. Trapped against the water, the deer turned its head and became a beautiful Li girl, and the two married and settled on the hill. The name Luhuitou records the moment, and Sanya took the nickname Lucheng, Deer City, from it.

The sculpture on the summit shows the deer turning its head, with the hunter and the girl beside it. It is the work of the Hainan sculptor Lin Yuhao and has become one of the best-known images of the city. Most people take one photograph with it and then turn around for the view.

What you see from the top

From the summit platforms you look:

  • North and west over downtown Sanya and the long curve of Sanya Bay, with Phoenix Island's tower blocks sticking out into the water.
  • East over Dadonghai's crescent beach and the hills beyond it.
  • South over open water toward the tip of the peninsula and the South China Sea.

On clear evenings the sun sets over Sanya Bay, and the city lights come on below you shortly after. Haze is common in the wet season, when the view can be flat and grey. In the dry season from November to April the air is usually clearer.

Getting up the hill

The park entrance is on the Luhuitou peninsula road, a short taxi ride from Dadonghai or downtown. From the gate, there are two ways to the summit:

  • Electric cart. Recent listings price it at roughly 15 to 28 yuan depending on whether you go one way or round trip. It makes sense with children, older relatives, or in the afternoon heat.
  • Walk. The paved path to the top takes about thirty minutes at an easy pace, with shaded sections and a few lookouts on the way. Bring water, because even in the late afternoon the climb is warm.

A good compromise is the cart up and the walk down in the cooler evening air.

Timing the sunset

Check the sunset time for your date; in Sanya it falls between roughly 18:00 and 18:30 in winter and close to 19:15 in midsummer. Aim to be at the summit 40 to 45 minutes before, so you can find a spot at the rail before the crowds arrive. On holidays and weekends the main platforms fill early, and the best angles toward Sanya Bay go first.

After dark the platforms are still open and the city lights are worth staying for. Recent listings give closing times late in the evening, with a song-and-dance performance in the park on some evenings. Confirm the hours on the day.

Getting back

The real queue at Luhuitou is not at the ticket gate. It forms after sunset, when everyone tries to leave at once and taxis back up at the entrance. Some ways around it:

  • Walk down while others are still waiting for carts.
  • Walk a few hundred metres along the road from the gate before calling a ride-hail car.
  • Stay at the top half an hour longer and leave when the rush has passed.

What to bring

  • Water, even for a short visit.
  • Insect repellent for the evening.
  • A light layer. The breeze at the summit can be cool after a hot day.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell in the wet season, when short showers blow through.
  • A phone with enough charge to call a car back.

Luhuitou in a Sanya trip

Luhuitou is not a half-day attraction by itself. It is the finish to a Dadonghai beach day, and the Sanya guide uses it that way on arrival day. If your flight lands late, skip it and come back another evening. Don't try to fit it onto your western day with Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan; the traffic back across the city at rush hour will cost you the sunset.

Photography

The deer sculpture is the foreground everyone wants. Take your shot and step aside so the next family can take theirs. The best wide views are from the platforms facing Sanya Bay, where you can include the city's waterfront and the setting sun. A small telephoto lens helps pick out Phoenix Island and the boats in the bay. Climbing on the sculpture is not allowed, and drones are generally not welcome.
