Yalong Bay, Sanya: A Full Day on the Best Sand in the City
Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) is the seven-kilometre crescent of fine white sand east of downtown Sanya, lined with international resort hotels and backed by green hills. It has the softest sand and some of the clearest water on Sanya's mainland coast, part of it inside the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve. The public beach is free; hotel guests have their own frontages. Above the bay, the Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park charges 158 yuan from October to April and 140 yuan from May to September, including the round-trip shuttle up the hill. Give the bay a full day, either from a resort or by taxi from the city, about half an hour away. The five-day plan is in the Sanya travel guide.
Why people come here
Yalong Bay was one of China's first winter beach resorts, and its reputation rests on simple things. In winter the air is around 27°C and the sea about 20°C. The sand is fine, white and long enough that even on a busy day you can walk away from the crowds. Near the shore the water shades through several blues, and the coral reefs offshore make it the best place on the mainland for casual snorkelling. Chinese marketing has called it the Hawaii of the East for decades.
The flip side is that it is a resort strip. The beach is a line of hotel frontages, and services, restaurants and facilities cluster around the resorts. Day visitors use the public beach area, which has its own facilities.
Planning the day
- Morning: swim and snorkel while the water is calmest and clearest, and before the sun is overhead.
- Midday: find shade. Lunch at a resort restaurant, a cafe near the public beach, or a picnic under an umbrella.
- Afternoon: water sports, or the forest park on the hill if you have energy.
- Evening: if you are staying at Yalong, a walk along the quiet, lit beach. If not, head back to the city for dinner.
Snorkelling and water sports
On calm days, snorkelling is possible from the beach near the rocky ends of the bay and on boat trips to the reef. Operators along the beach and at the bay's marine centres offer:
- Snorkelling trips and beginner dives with an instructor.
- Jet skis, banana boats, parasailing and sailing.
- Glass-bottom boats for those who don't want to get wet.
Some advice:
- Check that the operator is licensed and what the price includes before you pay.
- Don't stand on or touch coral; much of the bay is part of a protected reserve.
- Use a float or life vest if you are not a strong swimmer.
- Cancel without guilt on windy, choppy days, when visibility is poor and the swell picks up.
For serious diving, the clearer water and fuller dive infrastructure is on Wuzhizhou Island, a separate full day.
Tropical Paradise Forest Park
On the hill behind the bay, the Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park (亚龙湾热带天堂森林公园) is a rainforest park with boardwalks, a long rope bridge and lookouts over the whole crescent. According to the park's official site:
- Ticket with round-trip shuttle: 158 yuan in peak season (1 October to 30 April), 140 yuan in low season (1 May to 30 September).
- Free: children under 1.2 metres or under 6, and people over 70 for the entry ticket.
The shuttle drives you up the steep road, and from the top you walk the forest trails and the suspension bridge. Two to three hours is enough. It is a good way to see the bay from above and get out of the sun for a while. Wear proper shoes; the boardwalks are steep in places and slippery after rain. Book through the official channel, which may require advance reservation.
Getting there and where to stay
From downtown or Dadonghai, Yalong Bay is about thirty minutes by taxi or ride-hail. Buses also run from the city. If the beach is the main reason you are in Sanya, staying at a Yalong resort makes the day easier: you can swim in the morning, rest at midday and go back in the afternoon without a transfer.
If you are staying in the city, plan the transport both ways and leave before the evening rush if you want a seafood dinner in town.
Yalong, Dadonghai or Wuzhizhou?
- Yalong Bay: long, soft sand and resort calm. Best for a lazy beach day and casual snorkelling.
- Dadonghai: closest to the city, with easy evenings and food, but a smaller, busier beach with rip currents.
- Wuzhizhou Island: clearest water and serious diving, at a higher price and with a ferry.
Many visitors do all three on different days.
Seasons and crowds
The dry season from November to April is the best time, with calm seas and clear skies. Around the Spring Festival, hotel prices at Yalong reach their peak and the public beach is crowded. From May to October the weather is hotter, with afternoon storms and a typhoon risk from June to October; resort prices drop. Check typhoon warnings before you go, since water activities and the forest park can close.
Things to confirm before you go
- Public beach facilities if you are not staying at a resort.
- Water-sport operator licences and weather holds on the day.
- Forest park hours and whether advance booking is needed.
- Typhoon or storm warnings in the wet season.
