Siping Travel Guide: The Battle Memorial Hall, Yehe and the Nanhe River

Siping, in western Jilin on the Beijing–Harbin railway, is a short stop for two kinds of traveller: those interested in the Chinese Civil War, which was fought over this railway junction four times between 1946 and 1948, and those curious about the Yehe Nara, the Jurchen clan whose descendants included the Empress Dowager Cixi. The Siping Battle Memorial Hall, a national first-class museum, takes a morning; the Yehe old town takes a half-day; a walk on the Nanhe River fills an evening. One night, or a day stop between Changchun and Shenyang, is enough.

Why Siping mattered

Siping was a small place until the railway from Changchun to Dalian came through in 1902, followed by lines west to Baicheng (1923) and southeast to Tonghua (1939). That made it the junction of the Harbin–Dalian, Siping–Qiqihar and Siping–Meihekou railways, and in the Civil War, a prize. Control of the town changed in the first battle (March 1946); the Communist defence of April–May 1946, when Mao told the Northeast Bureau to "turn Siping into Madrid"; the failed Communist assault of June 1947, their first attempt to storm a large city; and the final battle of March 1948, when the city fell in a single day of fighting after a week clearing its outskirts. The town was nearly destroyed and was rebuilt after 1949, and it still calls itself the "Hero City".

Places worth visiting

The memorial hall tells the story of the four battles with maps, weapons and personal items: a captured ammunition belt, merit certificates, a Leica camera, an assault-team banner. It was named a national first-class museum in 2024. Individual visitors walk in with ID and do not need to book; the museum website lists hours of about 08:50–16:30 and free guided talks at 09:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 15:00 (in Chinese). A temporary exhibition on the trials of Japanese war criminals opened in late September 2026. Allow two hours.

The Liberation Martyrs Memorial Tower and the martyrs' cemetery are the other Civil War sites in the city.

Yehe Nara old town

The Yehe were one of the Haixi Jurchen confederations, and their walled town survived until Nurhaci, founder of the Manchu state, destroyed it in 1619. Two later empresses dowager, Cixi and Longyu, came from the Yehe Nara clan, which the town's tourist area makes much of. Little of the 1619 town survives above ground; the scenic area at the site is largely rebuilt, with displays on Yehe and Manchu history, so treat it as a cultural park. Chinese city guides list a small entry fee and hours of roughly 08:00–16:00, extended into the evening in summer. Yehe is outside the city, so arrange a taxi or driver and agree the return.

Nanhe River and the city

The landscaped Nanhe River runs through the centre with boardwalks and bridges, good for a walk after dinner.

Orchards around town

Siping sits where the Songliao Plain meets the hills, and fruit trees fill the gardens and edges of town in late summer.

Getting in and where to stay

Siping East station on the Beijing–Harbin high-speed line puts the city a short hop from Changchun and a little further from Shenyang, so the memorial hall works as a stop on the way between them. Siping station on the old Harbin–Dalian line is in the centre. Stay near the old station or the Nanhe River for walking access. Further north, the lakes of Songyuan and Baicheng are reached via Changchun.

When to come

May to September. Winters run November to March with January averaging about -13 °C; it is dry and sunny but bitterly windy. Summers are warm and humid, with most rain in June to August. The memorial hall works in any season.

Eating in Siping

Siping's best-known food is Li Liangui smoked meat in flatbread, which began in Lishu County, plus the full northeastern repertoire: guo bao rou, stews with vermicelli, dumplings and Korean-style cold noodles. Restaurants are generous; order two dishes for three people.

How to arrange the route

Stopover: morning train from Changchun or Shenyang, memorial hall at opening, lunch, Nanhe River walk, evening train onward.

One night: add Yehe old town on the second morning by taxi, then continue.

What to cut if short on time

Keep the memorial hall. Yehe is worth it only if the Manchu and Qing story interests you, since much of it is rebuilt. The city sights can go.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Memorial hall hours and closure days on the museum website or by phone (0434-5011518).
  • Yehe opening hours and ticket price for the season.
  • Train times on 12306; not every high-speed train stops at Siping East.

Frequently asked questions

Is Siping worth a stop?

For Civil War history, yes: the memorial hall is one of the main museums on the subject. Otherwise it is a quiet regional city.

How long does the Siping Battle Memorial Hall take?

About two hours, longer if you join a guided talk.

Is Yehe really Cixi's ancestral home?

Cixi belonged to the Yehe Nara clan, whose original town was here. She was born long after the town was destroyed, so the link is ancestral.
