Heavenly Lake of Tianshan, the Day Trip Most Urumqi Visitors Make

Tianchi, the Heavenly Lake, is a glacial lake on the northern slope of the Bogda range in the eastern Tian Shan. It lies in Fukang, a county-level city of Changji Prefecture, about 30 kilometres south of Fukang town and 45 kilometres east of Urumqi in a straight line. The road distance is longer, so most people treat it as a full day out of the city. The lake sits at roughly 1,900 metres, with spruce forest on its slopes and the snow summit of Bogda Peak behind it on clear days.

The lake itself

The figures are modest by Xinjiang standards. Chinese Wikipedia gives the lake as about 3 kilometres from north to south and 1.5 kilometres across at its widest, with an area of 4.9 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 105 metres. Sources disagree slightly on the altitude. English Wikipedia says 1,907 metres and Chinese Wikipedia says 1,928. It formed behind glacial moraine during the Quaternary ice ages, which is why it is long, narrow and steep-sided, closer to an alpine lake in Switzerland than to the open desert lakes of the south.

Bogda is a Mongolian word for holy or divine, and the peak rises to over 5,400 metres directly south of the lake. The scenic area lists four vertical belts of landscape, from desert foothills up through grassland and forest to snow and glacier, and you see a good part of that sequence in the drive up from the plain.

How it got its name

The lake was once called Yaochi, the Jade Pool. In Chinese myth that is the name of the lake where the Queen Mother of the West held her banquets, and the association has stuck, so there is a temple to her in the scenic area. The present name came in 1783, when Mingliang, the Qing commander at Urumqi, wrote a stele about cutting irrigation channels at what he called the Heavenly Lake of the holy mountain. Chinese Wikipedia cites that inscription as the source of the name.

The lake also opens one of the better-known travel books about Xinjiang. Vikram Seth was studying at Nanjing University in 1981 when he hitchhiked from here through Qinghai and Tibet to Nepal, and he called the resulting book From Heaven Lake.

Protection and World Heritage

Xinjiang set up a nature reserve around Bogda Peak in June 1980. Two years later the State Council put Tianchi on its first list of national scenic areas. In 1990 UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme accepted the Bogda northern slope as a biosphere reserve. The lake gained 5A status, the top national grade for tourist sites, in 2007. In 2013 it became part of the Xinjiang Tianshan World Heritage property, which covers four mountain areas across the range.

Tickets and the shuttle

Urumqi Bendibao, quoting Xinjiang's rules on scenic-area pricing, lists the 2026 entry ticket at 95 yuan from 1 April to 31 October and 45 yuan from 1 November to 31 March. Children up to six years old or 1.3 metres tall go free, and students and minors pay half. Visitors aged 65 and over enter free. People aged 60 to 64 pay half, and they go free during the official festivals for older people. Several 2026 travel reports add that the round-trip shuttle bus inside the scenic area costs 60 yuan and is compulsory, because private cars stop at the visitor centre at the bottom.

Booking is real-name and online. The local listings name the WeChat mini program Xunmeng Tianshan Zuoke Tianchi and the scenic area's own WeChat accounts, and they advise booking at least a day ahead. Peak-season hours are usually reported as 8:00 to 19:00, with last entry an hour before closing, and winter hours are shorter. Lake boats, the cable car up Mayashan and the temple charge separately. These prices and times change from season to season, so check the day's notice before you set off.

Getting there from Urumqi

Tour buses leave Urumqi in the morning and return in the late afternoon. The departure points named in 2026 listings include the bus station by the high-speed railway station, and fares are quoted at a few dozen yuan. A cheaper route is a coach to Fukang and then the scenic-area bus. A hired car with a driver gives the most control over timing. Whatever you choose, aim to reach the visitor centre early, because the shuttle ride up the valley takes a while and the last buses down set the end of your day.

Weather changes quickly at this height. A warm afternoon in Urumqi can be cool and wet at the lake, and from October onward snow is possible. Bring a warm layer and sun protection in every season.

Fitting it into a trip

One day is enough for the lake shore, a boat and perhaps the cable car. The Urumqi guide suggests keeping the evening light after a Tianchi day. A walk around the Grand Bazaar and dinner nearby suit that well. Many travellers go on to Turpan next, where the Jiaohe ruins and the Flaming Mountains are a few hours away by road or rail.

Before you go

  • Book real-name tickets a day ahead and carry the same ID.
  • Budget for the shuttle bus on top of the entry ticket.
  • Note that prices drop on 1 November, while hours shorten and some activities stop.
  • Pack a warm layer, since the lake is much cooler than the city.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Tianchi from Urumqi?

About 45 kilometres east in a straight line. By road, local guides put it at roughly one and a half to two hours each way.

How much is the ticket?

For 2026, local listings give 95 yuan from April to October and 45 yuan from November to March, plus about 60 yuan for the compulsory shuttle.

Can I drive my own car to the lake?

No. Cars park at the visitor centre and everyone rides the scenic-area shuttle up the valley.

Is it worth going in winter?

The lake freezes and the forest is quiet, which some people like. Facilities and boat trips are reduced, so check what is running.
