Zhouzhuang Water Town

Zhouzhuang (周庄) is the best-known of the canal towns around Suzhou, about an hour away by road in Kunshan. Since 9 July 2026 the ticket has been 80 yuan, cut from the 100-yuan list price, at all times including holidays. Register it in your own name and it covers three consecutive days, and the small theatre shows inside are now included. The scenic area runs 08:00 to 21:00, while halls such as the Shen Hall and Zhang Hall keep their own, shorter hours. Buy on the 「周庄旅游」 mini-program or at the visitor centre. A day trip covers the Twin Bridges, two big houses and a boat ride. A night lets you see the canals empty, early and late.

How Zhouzhuang fits a Suzhou trip is covered in the Suzhou travel guide.

How Zhouzhuang became famous

The town grew up on a web of canals between lakes, a place where, in an old saying, "every trip, however short, needs a boat". Its houses date mostly from the Ming and Qing. Its fame is surprisingly recent. In 1979 the painter Chen Yifei sketched here. In the US a few years later, his painting of the Twin Bridges, Memory of Hometown, was bought by the American oil magnate Armand Hammer. In 1984 Hammer presented it to Deng Xiaoping on a visit to China, and the town's tourism took off.

What to see

The Twin Bridges (双桥). Two stone bridges, Shide and Yong'an, built in 1843 and joined at right angles across two canals. Together they look like an old-fashioned key, which gives them the nickname "Key Bridge". Go before 10:00 or after 16:00 for a photo without crowds.

The Shen Hall (沈厅). The biggest house in town, rebuilt in 1742 by descendants of Shen Wansan, the legendary early-Ming merchant. Wansan is said to have paid for a large part of the Nanjing city wall for the first Ming emperor, then was banished to Yunnan for being richer than was safe. The house runs back through several courtyards from its own water gate. It is also where to try Wansan ti, braised pork knuckle, the town's signature dish and a very rich one.

The Zhang Hall (张厅). A Ming house with a canal running right through it, so boats could come in under the building.

Boats. Rowing boats with a boatwoman, who may sing, take groups along the main canals. Prices are posted at the official landings, and sharing a boat lowers the cost per person.

Nanhu (South Lake) on the edge of town is quiet at dusk.

Day trip or overnight?

Day trip: arrive by 09:30, do the Twin Bridges first, then the Shen Hall and Zhang Hall, a boat after lunch, and leave mid-afternoon. It works, but between about 10:00 and 15:00 the main lanes are very crowded.

Overnight: guesthouses inside the town let you walk the canals after the day visitors leave, with red lanterns reflected in the water, and again at dawn, when the lanes are empty. If what you want is atmosphere, the night is worth more than the extra hours of sightseeing. With the three-day ticket, the next morning costs nothing extra.

Getting there

  • Bus from Suzhou: direct buses leave from the bus station on the north square of Suzhou railway station for the Zhouzhuang visitor centre, roughly 09:20 to 18:30 outbound and 11:20 to 16:30 back, for 15.9 yuan. Check the latest timetable, especially the last bus back.
  • Visitor centre to the old town: about 2.4 km, by boat or shuttle.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing: about an hour from central Suzhou, more in holiday traffic.
  • From Shanghai: often done as a day trip. Allow at least an hour and a half by road.

Zhouzhuang or somewhere else?

On a short Suzhou trip, choose one water town. Zhouzhuang has the most famous sights and the longest history as a tourist town, and also the most crowds. Tongli is closer to the city and quieter, and Tongli's Retreat and Reflection Garden is on the UNESCO list. If Pingjiang Road in the old city already gives you enough canals, you might skip both.

A Zhouzhuang day ends neatly with dinner by Jinji Lake, on the way back into Suzhou. Keep the Humble Administrator's Garden and Tiger Hill for other days.
