Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan): Climbing Gulangyu's Summit

Sunlight Rock is the granite boulder on top of Gulangyu, and the climb takes about an hour there and back. The final iron-railed staircase is short, steep and single-file, so go straight there after your ferry lands, before the tour groups arrive. The ticket is listed at 50 yuan for adults in 2026, including the Qinyuan garden next door, or comes as part of the island's 90-yuan five-site ticket. From the round platform at about 92.7 metres, the highest point on the island, you see the red roofs of the old settlement, the Lujiang channel and the Xiamen skyline in one sweep. The boulder itself is over 40 metres tall and sits on Longtou Hill in the south-central part of the island; locals also call it Huangyan. You need a ferry booking before any of this matters, and that is explained on the Gulangyu page.

Timing the climb

This is the one Gulangyu stop where crowds build steadily through the day, which is why most people put it first.

  • Best: right at opening, or early afternoon on a weekday.
  • Busiest: sunrise and sunset, and late morning, when the first wave of groups from the early boats reaches the hill.
  • National holidays: expect a queue on the final stairs whatever the hour.

Heat matters as much as crowds. From June to September the route between the boulders is airless and the summit has no shade. Carry water and go early. Haze is common in the humid months and can flatten the view into grey. The clearest air usually comes after a front passes in autumn or winter.

The route up

From the entrance the path climbs stone steps and squeezes through passages between boulders, many carved with short inscriptions left by visitors over several centuries. It ends at a steep iron-railed staircase up the rock face to the summit platform. The last section is narrow, slow when it is busy, and fairly exposed. If you dislike heights or tight queues on steep steps, the lower terraces still give a good view, and you can skip the top.

On a clear day you look north over the old settlement, east across the channel to the Xiamen waterfront, and south over the harbour mouth toward the Zhangzhou shore and the open sea. A Xiamen saying holds that you have not really been to Xiamen until you have climbed it.

History on the hill

In the mid-seventeenth century Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga) used Gulangyu as a base to train his fleet against the Qing. The remains of his "water-drill platform" and the stone gate of his camp are on the slope below the summit.

At the foot of the rock, along Yongchun Road, two villas belong to the same story of the island. Kanqing Villa, built in 1918, was refitted as a field headquarters for Chiang Kai-shek in 1949. He stayed only one night, on 23 July, before events overtook him. Next door, Xilin Villa, finished in 1927, now houses the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall. The small Riguangyan Temple, a Qing-era foundation tucked against the rock, is a provincial heritage site.

The same ticket covers the Qinyuan garden on neighbouring Yingxiong Hill. A 202-metre cableway linked the two hills from 1995 to 2012. It was removed in June 2012 as part of the clean-up for the World Heritage bid, so you now walk between them.

Tickets and hours

  • Single ticket: 50 yuan for adults in 2026 listings, including Qinyuan.
  • Combined ticket: 90 yuan, adding Shuzhuang Garden, Haoyue Garden, the Organ Museum and the International Calligraphy Carving Art Museum.
  • Hours: published as about 08:00 to 17:30 from October to May and to 18:00 from June to September. Ticket sales stop earlier, and hours are sometimes extended in the summer holidays.
  • Concessions: students and seniors need the relevant ID shown at the gate.

Treat these as reference figures and check the notice for your date. Without a confirmed ferry, the rock ticket is useless.

Fitting it into the day

From Sanqiutian wharf it is an uphill walk through the lanes, signposted most of the way. An offline map helps where the lanes fork. From the summit, Shuzhuang Garden and the south-shore beach are downhill and close, a natural second stop before lunch. Haoyue Garden and Bagua Lou suit the afternoon on the way back to the boat.

If you have another day in Xiamen, keep it for the main island. Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple are side by side, and the coast along Huandao Road leads to Hulishan Fortress, where the view runs the other way, out across the strait. The full plan is in the Xiamen travel guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sunlight Rock worth 50 yuan?

For a first visit, yes. It is the only place that shows the whole island at once. If you also want Shuzhuang Garden and one more site, the 90-yuan combined ticket is better value.

How long does the Sunlight Rock climb take?

About an hour for the hill, the summit and the Koxinga sites, longer if the queue on the last staircase is long. Add time for Qinyuan.

Is it suitable for children or older visitors?

The lower steps are manageable for most people. The final staircase is steep and narrow, and anyone uneasy with heights can stop at the lower terraces.

What is the best time of day to go?

Opening time or early afternoon on a weekday. Avoid sunrise, sunset and late mornings on holidays if you want space on top.
