Shaanxi History Museum, Xi'an: Booking, Hours and What to See

The Shaanxi History Museum is free, but you cannot walk in without a booking. Tickets are released at 17:00 Beijing time, five days before each visit date, on the museum's official WeChat account (陕西历史博物馆), and foreign visitors book with a passport. In 2026 the main building in Xi'an has opened 08:30 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:00, and has dropped its Monday closure. It is one of China's great collections of ancient material: Zhou bronzes, Han objects, Tang tomb murals and the Hejiacun hoard of Tang gold and silver. Give it two to three hours. It is a short walk from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which makes the two an easy pair on a city day.

The full trip plan is in the Xi'an travel guide.

How booking works

The museum's line on its own entry rules is "free, but not without a ticket". In practice:

  1. Follow the official WeChat account 陕西历史博物馆 (Shaanxi History Museum) and open its booking menu. The museum's English visitor page lists the channels for overseas visitors, which have sometimes included named booking partners.
  2. Be ready at 17:00, five days before your chosen date. Popular dates, especially weekends, school holidays and the National Day week, can go very quickly.
  3. Enter each visitor's passport details exactly as printed. One ID can only book a limited number of times within a set period, and no-shows count against you, so cancel if your plans change.
  4. Bring the same original passport. Staff match it to the booking at the entrance.

If you miss out, check again later, because cancellations can return tickets to the system. Have a backup plan for the day, such as the city wall or the pagoda, in case no slot opens up.

Paid exhibitions. Some galleries, notably the Tang mural gallery when it is open, and temporary exhibitions have their own paid tickets. Read the order page carefully: buying a paid exhibition ticket can change how the free basic entry works for that visit.

Hours in 2026

From the museum's official guide page and 2026 notices:

  • Main museum (Xi'an): 08:30 to 19:00, last entry 18:00, during the 2026 extended-hours period.
  • Mondays: open. The museum dropped its Monday closure in 2026.
  • Holidays: the National Day period (1 to 7 October 2026) had longer hours, 07:30 to 20:30. Holiday hours are announced separately each time.

Older English pages describe shorter hours and a Monday closure, so check the notice for your date on sxhm.com or the WeChat account. The Qin and Han Civilization Museum, the museum's newer branch in Xixian New District between Xi'an and Xianyang, is a separate site with its own booking and hours.

What to see in two to three hours

The basic exhibition runs in chronological order through the history of the region, which held the capitals of the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties. Follow it in order and the later rooms make more sense.

Zhou bronzes. Ritual vessels from the Zhou dynasty heartland around Xi'an, many with inscriptions. They make a good introduction before you see the Qin material at the Terracotta Army.

Qin and Han. Weapons, tiles, seals and figurines from the period of the first emperor and the Han dynasty that followed. If you have already been to Lintong, these rooms fill in the context around the pits.

Tang cosmopolitan objects. Pottery camels, foreign merchants, horse riders and female figures show how international Tang Chang'an was. Many visitors find this the most enjoyable part.

The Hejiacun hoard. A cache of Tang gold and silver vessels, jewellery and medicines buried in large jars and found at Hejiacun, in the southern suburbs of Xi'an, in 1970. The workmanship is extraordinary, and the hoard says a great deal about elite Tang taste.

Tang tomb murals. The mural collection, with paintings removed from imperial tombs, is one of the museum's great strengths. Check whether the mural gallery is open and whether it needs a separate ticket on your date.

Exhibits rotate and loans come and go, so check the day's exhibition list before you set your heart on a particular piece. Flash photography is generally banned, and some halls restrict photos altogether. Follow the signs.

Getting there

The museum is at 91 Xiaozhai East Road in Yanta District. Two easy approaches by metro:

  • Dayanta station (Lines 3 and 4), then a walk west along Xiaozhai East Road.
  • Xiaozhai station (Lines 2 and 3), then a walk east.

Allow time for the security queue, especially in the morning and on weekends, so you arrive inside your booked slot.

Pairing it with the rest of the day

The museum and the pagoda are a natural pair. Spend the morning in the museum, have lunch in the Xiaozhai area, then see the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the afternoon and stay for the evening fountain show and the Tang street. If your museum slot is in the afternoon, reverse the order and visit the pagoda first.

Keep it off your Lintong day: the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace fill that by themselves. The Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter belong to a separate evening.

Museum or Terracotta Army, if you can only do one? The Terracotta Army. It is unique. The museum is the best way to understand the wider history, and the ideal third-day addition.

Things to confirm before you go

  • Opening hours and last entry for your date.
  • Whether the Tang mural gallery or any special exhibition you want needs a separate ticket.
  • Bag and security rules; large bags slow the queue.
