Mogao Caves, Dunhuang: How to Book and What the Visit Is Like
The Mogao Caves (莫高窟) are the Buddhist cave temples 25 kilometres southeast of Dunhuang, painted and carved over about a thousand years and the reason most travellers come this far west. Every visit must be booked in advance under your real name through the official "莫高窟参观预约网" WeChat service account or mini-program; there is no ticket office at the caves. In the 2026 peak season, 1 April to 30 November, the normal visit costs 238 yuan and includes two digital films and eight caves with a guide; the emergency ticket, released when demand is high, costs 100 yuan for four caves and no films. Book the normal ticket the moment it opens, arrive at the Digital Exhibition Center thirty minutes before your slot, and allow three to four hours. The rest of the trip is planned in the Dunhuang travel guide.
Tickets for 2026
From the Dunhuang Academy's 2026 opening notice and ticket page:
| Normal visit | Emergency visit | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | 2 digital films + 8 caves with a guide | 4 caves, no films |
| Full price | 238 yuan | 100 yuan |
| Concession | 148 yuan | 55 yuan |
| Daily limit | 6,000 | 12,000 |
A special concession rate of 20 yuan applies to some groups with documents, collected at the manual ticket windows. Both ticket types include the shuttle bus between the Digital Exhibition Center and the caves.
Hours: 1 April to 30 November, 08:00 to 18:00, ticket checks stop at 16:10. 1 December to 31 March, 09:00 to 17:00, checks stop at 15:10.
The emergency mode is switched on by the academy in the busy season, when normal tickets have sold out. It is a quicker, more crowded visit. If you can get a normal ticket, take it. Travel platforms also list optional "special caves" that can be added after a normal visit at an extra charge per cave, depending on what is open that day; ask at the site.
Low-season visits are calmer and cheaper; summaries of the winter arrangement report a lower normal-ticket price with more caves shown. Check the academy's notice for the current winter terms.
How to book
- Use only the official channels: the "莫高窟参观预约网" WeChat service account or its mini-program. Foreign passport holders and visitors with Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan travel documents use the "Ticket Booking" option in the service account's "预约购票" menu.
- Book under each visitor's real name and ID. Ticket, document and person must match.
- Book early for the peak season. Visitor reports say peak-season normal tickets are released about thirty days ahead, early in the morning, and that summer and October holiday dates go within minutes. Set an alarm and save everyone's ID details in the app beforehand.
- Check for returns if you miss out. Cancelled tickets come back into the system, and the emergency ticket is a fallback.
Registered travel agencies book through the academy's own system. Anyone else offering to "get you in" at the gate is not a solution.
On the day
- Go to the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center, not the caves. Arrive at least thirty minutes before your time slot.
- Normal and concession ticket holders take their ID to a manual window or self-service machine to print the "莫高窟购票信息单", the ticket information slip, then enter with the slip and ID. Emergency ticket holders scan their ID card at the gate of Exhibition Hall 2.
- Watch the two films in the domed theatre. They show caves you will not enter and explain what you will see. Don't treat them as a waiting room.
- Take the shuttle bus to the cave site, where a guide leads a small group through the day's eight caves.
- Return by shuttle to the Digital Center.
What the caves are like
Tradition credits the monk Yuezun with cutting the first cave in 366 CE. Building, painting and sculpting continued through the dynasties into the Yuan. Hundreds of caves survive, with murals and painted clay figures in styles that trace a millennium of Buddhist art along the Silk Road. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1987.
Inside, caves are dim to protect the pigment. Your guide unlocks each one, lights the walls with a torch and explains the paintings, then locks it again behind the group. Which caves are open rotates for conservation, so you cannot choose cave numbers. Expect a mix of small and large caves; tours often include one of the big Buddha caves, but not always.
Photography inside the caves is not allowed. Don't touch or lean on the walls, and keep up with your group. The cliff exterior, with the multi-storey wooden facade over the large Buddha cave, is where people take photos.
Planning around your slot
- Morning slots are the classic choice. Afterwards, rest, have lunch in town, and keep the afternoon light. The Dunhuang Museum is a good option.
- Afternoon slots are fine, and pair with a late visit to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake for sunset only if you have energy left.
- Don't put Mogao and the passes on the same day. Yumen Pass and Yangguan are in the opposite direction, out in the Gobi.
Getting there
The Digital Exhibition Center is between the city and the caves. Taxis and ride-hailing from central Dunhuang take about twenty minutes, and some hotels arrange transfers. Plan your return before you go; on busy days, cars back to town queue at the center.
If you could not get a ticket
Try the emergency ticket, check for returned tickets in the days before, or move your Dunhuang dates. If none of that works, the Dunhuang Museum and the smaller Western Thousand Buddha Caves west of town give some idea of the art, and the dunes and passes still make a trip. It is better to plan the whole Dunhuang stay around your Mogao date than to book hotels first.
Things to confirm before you go
- Your booking, time slot and matching ID or passport.
- Whether you hold a normal or emergency ticket, and where each one checks in.
- Opening hours and the last ticket check for the season.
