Ice and Snow World, Harbin: How to Plan a Night at the Ice Park
Ice and Snow World (Bingxue Dashijie, 冰雪大世界) is the park Harbin builds from Songhua River ice every winter on the north bank, west of Sun Island. Go in the late afternoon, stay until well after dark, and budget about 300 yuan per adult: last season's standard ticket was 328 yuan. The 28th season (winter 2026–27) has been announced but its opening date and prices had not been published as of 13 October 2026, so do not buy from any site that claims to sell them yet. Metro Line 2 stops at Ice and Snow World station, and the rest of a winter trip is planned in the Harbin travel guide.
What we know about winter 2026–27
The park was founded in 1999 and has now run for 27 seasons. At a provincial winter-tourism launch on 12 October 2026, the operator said the 28th park will cover 1.25 million square metres and use about 400,000 cubic metres of ice and snow, the largest build so far, with more than a thousand ice and snow structures. A new extra-long ice slide is planned for the west side of the park, alongside the existing big slide and smaller slides spread through the grounds. The operator also lists stage shows and ice and snow sports events for the season.
What has not been announced: opening day, ticket prices, hours and entry time slots. For a rough idea, the 27th season opened at 10:00 on 17 December 2025. Treat that as a pattern, not a promise. Ticket products usually appear close to opening, on the park's official site and WeChat channels first.
Last season's prices, as a budget guide
These are the figures the park published for winter 2025–26:
- Standard adult ticket: 328 yuan, with an early price of 298 yuan for visits on or before 23 December.
- Concession ticket for students, children and Harbin residents: 240 yuan.
- Free entry for small children, people over 65 and several other groups, partly through a limited daily quota, so check the rules for your category.
The same season also showed the risk. On 19 February 2026 the park announced a two-day closure because temperatures had risen above freezing, then reopened on 22 February with prices cut to 228 and 168 yuan. A warm spell in February can shut the park or soften the ice, so keep a spare evening in Harbin if the ice park is the reason you came, and don't book a non-refundable train for the same night.
Why dusk is the time to arrive
By day the ice is grey-blue blocks, impressive for its size and not much else. The point of the place is the lighting: coloured LEDs set inside the ice turn the towers and castles into the glowing city on the posters. In Harbin's midwinter the light fails around four in the afternoon. Arriving between about 15:00 and 16:00 gives you half an hour of daylight to understand the layout, then the switch-on.
Three to four hours covers a night visit for most people. After that, cold rather than boredom ends the evening. Last season's hours ran from late morning to around 21:30 or 22:00, with last entry earlier, and the park adjusts them through the winter.
Inside: what to prioritise
- Walk the main ice architecture first, while your fingers still work for photos. The central tower and the big stage area are where most of the light design goes.
- Decide on the slides early. The long ice slide is the queue that defines the park, and the line stands outdoors. At peak times expect to wait an hour or more for a ride lasting under a minute. One ride is plenty. If the new west-side slide opens, it should spread the crowd a little.
- Use the heated halls. There are indoor rest areas. Go in every forty-five minutes or so, longer for children.
- Skip expensive food inside. Eat a proper hot meal before you go. A small thermos of hot water is worth bringing if security allows it on the day.
Clothing: the part people get wrong
Night temperatures of minus twenty to minus thirty Celsius are normal in January, and you stand still a lot in queues. What works:
- A long down coat that covers your thighs, over thermal base layers top and bottom.
- Insulated, waterproof boots with thick soles. Cold comes up through thin soles from the ice underfoot within an hour.
- A hat that covers your ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and two layers of gloves: thin touchscreen liners under thick mittens.
- Stick-on warmers for the toes and the small of the back. Convenience stores in Harbin sell them.
Fashion boots, cotton jeans and a single pair of gloves are how people end up leaving after forty minutes. Numbness, or white waxy patches on fingers or cheeks, means go inside straight away.
Phone batteries die fast in this cold. Keep the phone in an inside pocket, carry a power bank close to your body, and save your ticket QR code and return-trip details as screenshots before you go in.
Getting there and getting back
From Central Street or Harbin station, Metro Line 2 runs north under the Songhua via Sun Island to Ice and Snow World station; the trip takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes. This is the easiest way in, since taxis and ride-hailing slow down badly around closing time when everyone leaves at once. If you do take a car back, walk a few hundred metres away from the main gate before calling it.
The park and the Sun Island snow sculpture expo are separate attractions with separate tickets. The usual winter pairing is Sun Island in daylight, a break somewhere warm, then the ice park after dark. If your group is tired or underdressed, pick one.
Who should skip it
The ticket is expensive and the park is crowded in Spring Festival and New Year weeks, when the security line alone can take a long time. If someone in your group handles cold badly, or the forecast for your only evening is extreme, spend the night on Central Street instead, where you can step into a cafe every ten minutes. In summer the outdoor park does not exist; the Songhua embankment by the Flood Control Monument and Sun Island are the warm-weather alternatives.
