Sun Island, Harbin: Summer Island, Winter Snow Sculptures
Sun Island (Taiyangdao, 太阳岛) is the big wooded island in the Songhua River opposite Harbin's old town, and it is two different visits depending on the month. From June to August it is Harbin's summer park: wetlands, lakes, birch woods and river beaches, best on a half-day walk with a sightseeing cart for the long stretches. From late December to early March it hosts the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo, white carved snow that you see in daylight, with last season's standard ticket at 198 yuan and the gates closing to new visitors at 16:30. Metro Line 2 has a Sun Island station, a short ride north of Central Street under the river. The rest of the trip is planned in the Harbin travel guide.
The island in numbers
The scenic area covers about 88 square kilometres of river island, wetland and woodland between the old city south of the river and the newer Songbei district to the north. It is a national 5A scenic area and is described in Chinese sources as the country's largest urban riverside ecological area. Where the name comes from is disputed. One explanation links it to a Manchu word for a kind of bream once caught off its sandbanks; another simply credits the sunny beaches. Locals mostly know it from a 1979 song, "On Sun Island" (《太阳岛上》), which turned it into a national summer postcard.
That size is the main thing to plan around. You cannot walk the whole island in a day, and you should not try.
Summer: how to spend a half day
From June to August the island is where Harbin goes to get out of the city. The useful parts for a visitor sit in the core scenic area near the south shore:
- Lakes and wetland boardwalks, the quietest part of the island on weekdays. Bring insect repellent for the boardwalks in July.
- Birch and willow woods along the paths, which are shaded and cool even on a hot afternoon.
- Russian-style villas and small museums in the old resort area, a reminder that the railway-era Russians used the island as a summer retreat.
- River beaches facing the old town, with a good view back to the Daoli skyline.
Take the sightseeing cart between clusters and walk the parts in between. Rent a bike if they are available that day. Three to four hours is a comfortable visit. Summer evenings on the water can turn cool, so carry a light jacket, and bring sunscreen, because there is little shade on the beaches and the northern sun on the river is stronger than people expect.
A pleasant way back is by boat across the Songhua to the embankment near the Flood Control Monument, when river services are running. Then walk south down Central Street for dinner.
Winter: the Snow Sculpture Art Expo
The expo is a separate fenced zone on the island with its own ticket. It is carved packed snow, white on white, at a scale that is hard to judge from photos: the largest sculptures are the height of buildings. Each year has a theme, and teams from China and abroad compete in carving events in January.
The expo needs daylight. Snow sculpture reads through shadow, and the low winter sun gives the best relief in the morning and early afternoon. Last season, the 38th, it opened on 31 December 2025 and closed on 3 March 2026. The figures published for that season were:
- Hours 9:00 to 17:00, with ticket sales stopping at 16:00 and entry at 16:30.
- Standard ticket 198 yuan, concession 128 yuan.
- From 24 February, as the snow began to soften, prices dropped to 98 and 68 yuan.
Dates and prices for the 39th expo (winter 2026–27) had not been announced as of mid-October 2026. Check the official notice before you plan a specific day.
Sun Island or Ice and Snow World?
They are different things, and they are on the same side of the river but a few kilometres apart:
- Sun Island expo: carved snow, daylight, calmer, cheaper.
- Ice and Snow World: lit ice architecture, best after dark, louder, more expensive, with the long slides.
The standard winter day is the expo in the morning, a hot lunch somewhere warm, and the ice park from late afternoon into the night. Both are on Metro Line 2, which makes the hop easy. That is a long, cold day, though. If anyone in your group is struggling with the cold, choose one: Ice and Snow World if you want the classic night spectacle, the snow expo if you prefer to see sculpture in natural light without the crowds.
Getting there
Metro Line 2 runs from Harbin station through Central Street to Sun Island station, then on to Ice and Snow World. From Sun Island station it is a short walk to the main scenic-area gate. Taxi drivers know 太阳岛; for the winter expo, say 太阳岛雪博会 so you are dropped at the expo gate.
In winter the river wind across the island makes it feel colder than the city centre. Dress as you would for the ice park, with insulated boots and a hat that covers your ears, and plan short outdoor stretches with warm-ups in between.
Safety notes for both seasons
- Stay on signed paths in the wetlands. Frozen edges in winter and soft banks in summer can both give way.
- Keep children close near the water and, in the expo, near the snow slides and vehicle tracks, where ice hides under a thin layer of snow.
- In winter, if anyone shows signs of frostnip (numbness, pale or waxy skin), go indoors at once and end the visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sun Island worth visiting in summer?
Yes, as a half day of walking, boating and river views. It is the best place in Harbin to see what the city looks like when it is not frozen.
How long do I need?
Three to four hours in summer. Two to three hours for the winter expo, longer if you rest indoors between sections.
How much is the Sun Island snow expo ticket?
Last season's standard ticket was 198 yuan and the concession 128 yuan, cut to 98 and 68 yuan late in the season. Prices for 2026–27 had not been announced as of mid-October 2026.
Can I see the snow expo and Ice and Snow World on the same day?
Yes. Do the expo by day and the ice park after dark; both are on Metro Line 2.
